thinkin about buying an rx-8

hey im trying to decide wat car to buy and i really like the rx-8 except for certain issues (the back is kinda funky and the rotary engine is hard 2 repair =\ ) how often does the rotary engine break down anyways and how much more does it cost 2 repair than a normal car? and can anyone list some pros and cons about this car? it would be most helpful. thx ahead of time

It's not the expense as much as it's the fact that there aren't many people that know how to work on them so you're most likely always going to have to go to the dealer for repairs.

For pros and cons just start reading the various posts, you'll find a lot more pros since it's an RX-8 forum.

Basics.

Pros:
Lots of fun to drive
Good overall package
The pratical sportscar

Cons:
Could use a little more umph
Poor gas mileage
Unproven reliability

What has the forum come to when it has to be me being nice to the noobs?! :p

Your concern should not be the "Rotary" but the electronic systems on ANY NEW CAR. These and all the small things, like cracked defoster ****, are the spots you will have the most repairs. The longer the base model is on the market - the more time the manufacture will have to fix all the little things and for the mechanics to learn how to fix them. So the RX8 is very new, and as you can read here, has had many little problems. But the warranty takes care of most of them.

I am also getting older and have back problems. Always did all my work and modifications, including racing, for most my life. Many Mazdas, Fords, Chevies, Dodge, motorcycles, and boats. But now I only change the oil and rotate the tires on my RX8 as I don't have the proper test equipment and training.

The base rotary engine has been around for ~35 years and has no valves to mess up. Keep it full of oil and coolant and you will have no problem.

I love my RX8. Buy the 8 if you want the fun of it. Forget all the other stuff.

But don't buy it if you're going to be concerned about gas mileage (probably highest inane thread count).

The simple fact is that while THIS particular design has not been out that long, at least one pretty serious endurance run has shown it to be quite robust. Given that and the substatially lower number of moving parts - I believe this engine will turn out to be quite reliable.

If you are looking for a unique car with a comfortable, refined interior that has great power at a reasonable price, then the RX-8 is your car. The rotary may be expensive to fix but rarely requires service.

If you want a plain car with a plain interior with some ground effects, some cheap interior accents and big turbo, then buy an SRT-4. It'll get you there slightly faster, but no one will look and your passengers will all have hemorroids.

Personally, I think the car for you would be a riced out Civic HF with a fake plastic carbon fiber hood, an aluminum trunk wing the size of a stadium bleacher, 20" rims with 9" brake rotors, and one red door on a blue car.

You'd hate the -8, really. We're all masochists here who deal with the funky rear end and have retained mechanics living in our garages.

Dude, do you not read the other posts??? There was another noob that asked the EXACT SAME QUESTION yesterday!!
https://www.rx8club.com/rx-8-discussion-3/potential-buyer-need-input-experiences-45017/

Basically, nothing wrong with the engine and if you don't like the styling ... don't buy it. I don't like the way Porsches are shaped, so I don't want to own one. Read up a little first before posting straight away.

why do you think that's crazy talk? Would you really want to own something that you think is ugly but some how exudes "status"? Heck no. Personally I think the front end of porsches look like frogs. If I had that kind of money I'd go with something like pretty like an Aston Martin.
