The valet key most definitely will start your car. That's why it is called the 'valet key' - it's intended to be given to the valet parking attendant so they can move your car but the key does not open the glove box.

see, that's what I'm thinking... I cant see why it would unlock my car and do everything but start it if it wasnt specifically cut for my car. I only brought the key I use in (I got my car used and only got the key and valet key). I got the same key back and then found those 2 in the car.

Question to those with a bit more knowledge than me on the subject... If the key has been programmed, can it be reprogrammed? I dont feel like driving all the way to the dealership and giving them keys to my car if they indeed could be used to start it...

Also, am I correct in the assumption that keys are cut differently for each car, therefor the fact that it works with mine (except for starting) would indicate that they are keys for -my- car, correct?

I mean, it only seems logical... unless we all have the same key that just needs to be programmed for each car (which would be retarded imo).

It's plenty easy to lock the keys to an Elise in the trunk, don't ask me how I know. There's no way to open the trunk from the cabin and once you latch it shut it's shut.

^ true - I was thinking more along the lines of locking yourself out of the running car, since that's the only way I've ever locked myself out. Which, in a way, is probably better for me b/c AAA makes you a priority if it's running!

oh, and how do you know?

The true test would be if your old keys work

The new ECU would have to be programmed to run the immobilizer system

I would hazard a guess that any old keys would have to be programmed to work again........and that they gave you two they had to use to program your old original key to work
