Sun roof rattles

Help...I did a search but no luck.

My sun roof rattles when open and quits if I close the sun roof a few inches. I read some place that someones rattles got worse after asking Mazda to fix it.

Question; Has anyone found a fix for this problem?

Thanks

mine does too - noticed more that I have been using it since it is hot out now.

i only really notice it when it is open fully...when it is only open to 'tilt' i don't hear it at much, if at all.

it seems lieke many many people have this problem...maybe eventually Mazda will make it a TSB.

I brought mine it to the dealership last week about this problem. They took it for a drive, and agreed that there was indeed a rattle and said it'd take a couple weeks to order "parts".

I'm not sure what "parts" they need but hopefully that fixes it!

I had the sunroof closed on the highway going a little fast and found one rattle was the dome light. Probably try a little foam tape.

I found the pop-up wind deflector rattles at times. Hold it down while you're driving & see if it goes away.

Yeah mine rattles when the sunroof is fully open. The rattle is coming from the passenger side of the track. If you press your finger against it, it goes away, but it's probably not to safe to drive with your finger held against it.

My sunroof started rattling last summer...while I was waiting 3 months for a replacement A/C amplifier. Like many others if I put a finger or two on the passenger side black rail it would go away (or lessen). Eventually after trying many other things I ended up just lubricating the four pieces holding the glass to the rails with WD-40. Haven't heard a peep out of the sunroof since.

I had this problem and had the dealer fix it - same day service. I told them it problably needed lubbing. There is like a nylon bushing or wheel that the sunroof "slides on" mine was kind of grabbing. Anyway, it probly needs lubbing. I looked at the autoparts store for the kind of lube I say in the rail. Its trasparent and gel like. I could not find a match and I didn't think to as the dealer what they used. I figure the back and forth action takes its tole and eventually rubs away the lube - thus rattle.

Happened on my VW GTi too, I fix was the same.

Man I wish someone could post a DIY on lubing the sunroof...I'm having a hard time visualizing where to lube.

That's funny...after I wrote that I thought to myself "how long until rotten pops his head in and makes fun of me?".

13 minutes...not too bad! :p

3 pictures. "1" is a larger one for reference. "2" is the front roller. I used WD-40 on the white roller. "3" is the rear roller. You can only see the black piece that attaches to the slider from this angle.

You can also probably tell from the marks on the nut that I removed the glass from the sunroof in order to inspect it, and I'd venture to say it will be alot easier to lubricate the rollers with WD-40 or some other kind of grease with the glass off anyhow.

LOL, I can take pics if you want of where they lubed mine!!! They just used white lithium based spray grease and my rattles all went away. Nasty stuff, I would have prefered that they use a clear lubricant. I'm sure they also retightened something as a rattle that annoying, wouldn't be a quick lube job.

I too only had rattles in full open position and never had the rattle if it was just on tilt (or anywhere in between).

Mine Rattles too and for me it is clearly the Rear Dome fixture... I drove around my hood "YO!" for 15 minutes today Holding, Feeling & Caressing all those Taboo parts, at varying speeds and over different patches of road. My tracks, rails, lip and bolts did not seems to make a difference while holding them... but applying just a little upward pressure to the rear dome shushed the rattle away!

Thanks for the advice guys. I am going to grease it myself because I have already taken her to the dealer. They said they "fixed" it, but to no avail.

I also had an annoying full open sun roof rattle. After reading this thread I skeptically tried a little silicone lubricant on the tracks and rollers and it worked. No more rattle. Thanks

The samething happen to me. I just took in my car two days ago, they fix the problem. The rattle was really bad, I would hear it just backing up slowly.

Can you post pics of where you put the lube? It's getting on my nerves and I need to fix it!

I have the EXACT same rattle, goes away if you close the sunroof slightly.

I just wanted to say thanks for mentioning this fix. I used good old WD40 on my sunroof yesterday and the rattle is now gone. Sweet!

Now, if it'd only stop raining long enough for me to drive around with the roof open ...

Smile dealer fixed mine!

Oak Tree Mazda (San Jose, CA) did a great job fixing my sunroof rattle, although they had my car for like 3 hours. Description of what they did:

"I confirmed customers complaint and I drove with another Tech to find the rattle I then tryed (sic) to reset the motor to the stops after I road tested noise still there I removed the glass and checked the linkage and lubed everything looks good so I reinstalled the glass and adjusted and reprogrammed the moter (sic) went on a test drive no more noise..."

Sounds like basically exactly what you guys are saying to do in this thread for roof rattles.
