TX Steering motor frozen?

Got up this morning got to the car to crank it up and let it warm up a bit. AMB read 18 on the display went to go turn the wheel and it was stuck. Like on major lock wouldn't move a cm. I'm sitting there like WTf is going on? My electrical power steering motor was frozen I assume. Had to sit in the car with it running for about 15 minutes before the steering was released to where I could turn the wheel then it was fine driving after that. I live in dallas so first of all 18 degrees really?!? and second, is anyone else having this issue?

Never had that problem but mine has been sitting outside in these low temps for several days straight, I'm going to start it up when I get off work today and see how it behaves. Dallas area is seeing coldest temps in past 13yrs or something like that.

I've been able to turn my steering wheel with the engine and electrical system off, but it does take quite a bit of effort.

Was the Power Steering Malfunction Indicator Light on during this? Note: The steering may feel rigid if you continuously attempt to steer when the vehicle is stopped or moving extremely slowly. This has been designed to protect the system and does not indicate a malfunction. If you do not attempt to steer for a minute power steering will be restored.

Well? If the fluid was frozen wouldn't that stop the wheel from moving?!?!?!?!

No I had that issue before where it malfuntioned and this one is a replacement cause the original failed when I was driving and that wasn't a pretty scene. In this instance it wouldnt release the steering until the motor was defrosted. First few times it released when the car warmed up but when we hit under 20 its took about 10 extra minutes before it released the steering.

Most cars will lock the steering wheel if turned all the way to the right or left.

You just have to jerk it a little to unlock it.

Saftey feature.
