Sport Package Std on 6sp

I was wondering it seems like I have read this in reviews on the 8 that the sport suspension package,(18"Rims, Big Brakes,sport suspension) were going to be standard on the 6speed 8. If this is so, man, Mazda is creating a great deal at 26,600 or whatever it is.

Is this true that the sport package is std on the 6sp in the U.S.

Hehe.. I was wondering the same thing.. I just asked about the 16" "base" wheels. If we get the 18"/suspension/brakes for 26600 that would be an amazing deal.

i just looked at the press kit,

(in north america)
the 6sp manual only comes with the sport suspension and 18 inch wheels.

EDIT: There are 16" brakes on the standard model, 17" on the high power.

Hey Herc,

Where is this data from....not to be a party pooper, but I don't think it is accurate. How can they have 16" brakes on the non-sport model when the wheels are only 16"? Unless the RX-8 employs a really cool inboard brake design, this just isn't possible. Besides, 16" and 17" brakes are ridiculously huge. I would expect 13" max....though larger would be cool :D

Mazda has put out a press kit chock full of information.

I've verified my findings in this thread with an attached image, so take a look for yourself

Ah...there's the problem. 16" type and 17" type are refering to the wheel size, I believe. If you convert the mm to inches, you'll see that the disc diameter is 12.7.

Off topic, but does that nifty press kit happen to list the compression ratio?

323mm is roughly 13 inches for the big wheels
303mm is roughly 12 inches for the little wheels
302mm or again roughly 12 for the back wheels either way

In any case, 12.7 is GREAT for a car that weighs ~2900 lbs. If my memory is correct, the brakes on the FD RX-7 were 11", and it weighed nearly the same.

I wonder why the Japanese 6-speed gets a slightly taller 3rd gear. There must be a good reason why they'd bother to cut a separate cog just for that one variant.

That's accurate - it just isn't referring to the diameter of the brake disc. This form of reference to the size of the brakes is used in Europe and elsewhere, where they refer to the size of the wheel required to clear the brake disc and caliper. So, the "16" brakes" require a 16" diameter wheel at a minimum, and the "17" brakes" require a 17" diameter wheel at a minimum (note that the Sport suspension package uses 18" wheels anyway - so you should be able to get winter wheels and tires in a -1 sizing on 17" wheels!). The information also lists the exact brake disc diameter separately.
