Flat was a piece of metal rod maybe 3/8" in diameter and 6" long. That did a number on the tire.

Thanks for all the input. I drive 98 miles round trip to work each day,
but always near recovery sources, AKA , AAA. However on the
weekends I often take a 300 mile run to the south so I might
get the small donut spare for the trunk just in case I find that lucky
pot hole. I have two bent up rims in the garage from the del Sol
that I had to limp home on the silly small spare twice.

You could always buy the spare and put in a bag or some covering and throw it in the trunk when you go a longer distance. No need to drive around with extra weight if you don't have to.

The only time I have ever had a flat with my RX-8 I hit some harsh pot holes that blew out two tires and bent rims and the valve core tool broke, so I replaced the bent rims with ones I bought from a forum member and replaced the tires with runflats. I'm now considering selling my spare tire kit (but I might keep it for use with my snow tires since those are not runflats).

The vast majority of my long trips are to autocross events. In those cases, I have a trailer with 4 wheels and tires towed behind the car. Not ideal to run an r-comp on the highway, but if the tireslime won't work, then it's better than nothing.

My 8 came with the spare tire kit- I bought mine as is new, and was not looking for that option package.

Anyway- it's obviously an afterthought thing. The spare tire and wheel mounts at a very space inefficient angle in the trunk- making the trunk vastly less usable, and blocking the trunk light and pass through.

Ditto, You don't need the spare tire, fix-a-flat is all you need... or even better runflats, except when you hit something like a huge pothole in the middle of an I78 that bends your rim. Then a light bulb goes on...

A spare is worth it just for the piece of mind... and what is the use of saving space in the trunk for everything else, when at any instant you may be going nowhere fast.
