Skipping gears..

Is there anything damaging / "incorrect" about skipping gears? A lot of times I'll get on the highway in 4th and get up to 75-85 and go straight to sixth. I wasn't sure if there was anything with the synchros, etc, that made this a bad idea. It just seems silly when I'm already at cruising speed on the highway to go into 5th and then immediately into 6th. Sometimes I also do this with 1st and 3rd, if I get up to 35-40 in first from a light, and it's a 35 mph zone.. I'll just go into 3rd.

As long as you aren't causing a big difference in RPMs between the engine and drivetrain or going into a gear that is too high for your speed, it's fine. For instance, if you're doing 60 in 2nd and want to go straight to 5th or 6th, that's OK. Skipping gears isn't a problem in itself, as long as you match revs or know you are already at the right speed for that gear you should be OK.

your biggest concern is rpm matching. skipping gear doesn't hurt anything.

Skipping gears will extend the life of the syncros in the gears you do not use. Just rev match properly and no harm will be done.

I skip 5th all the time. I even do the odd 2-4 shift sometimes.

LOL, sometimes on the highway I drop from 6th to 3rd just for fun, not even to accelerate. I see the heads of other drivers near me turn around like "WTF?!" Once a guy tried to chase me when I did it, but I wasn't really wanting to take off.

I use 6th to 3rd all the time to pass... with the CAI+exhaust, I get a good sound out of it. Especially in tunnels

I primarily meant shifting up.. I shouldn't have to rev match that, right? It's always going to be lower RPM. I do rev-match on the way down.

Right, you generally don't need to double-clutch an upshift.

You won't have to give it gas, but you should still rev match (ex: don't force it in at 5500 rpm if it needs to be at 2500).
