sirius radio install

So I succesfully installed the Auxmod in to my 8 and primarily use it for my ipod. But I was planning on installing my Sirius Radio in also.

My attempt at physically installing it today wasn't succesfull. Not only is there no good spot to mount the radio itself, but on most cars you can run the wire from the antenna magnet under the weather stripping around the rear windshield and down to the trunk. Not on the RX8 though. Just not enough room.

Anyone deal with same issue and come up with a better solution?

I used to have a sirius mounted in my 04. The unit was a sirius sportster 5

you can mount the radio where the ash tray is, needs some dremel work to fit flush but will look good once in. I also dremeled down the ash tray cover to fit perfectly around the radio unit itself.

Doing it this way will allow you to run all of your wires hidden. You have to push the cigerette lighter back and out of the ashtray to fit it in there but doing this will hide all of the wiring underneath the radio. You will also be able to run the antenna wire underneath the center console all the way to the trunk. It will enter the through the center rear hatch and from here you can decide how you want to run it to the outside. I chose just to zip tie it to the top of the trunk, go underneath the weatherstripping and exit out on the from driver side of the trunk.

good luck and hope this helps a bit, not sure how it will differ on the r3

Huh, didn't think to just custom mount it in the ash tray but it's a damn good idea. No worries on the dremel work, I can handle that. Good call.

You were able to get the wire under the weather stripping eh? It just didn't want to fit under mine, and I've got an 04 also. I wonder if I'll have reception issues if I mount the antenna on the trunk itself...

I wouldnt think you would have bad reception, but as for the weatherstripping you can literally just pull it up off of the trunk the run the wire inside of it when you put it back on and have it exit out to the exterior.

oh and I held my radio in place with just a 2 dollar pack of velcro from walmart, never had an issue with it rattling loose or coming undone and it gives you the freedom to do a quick removal of the unit if need be.

Great, thanks for the advice. I'll tackle it again when I get the chance.

I had plenty of room to go through the weather stripping on the trunk.

As for the mount, mine is the Mazda one, it's integrated to the head unit. Pain in the *** install.

Run your antenna through the console and into the trunk, around the left upper side of the trunk insulation/trim, up and out the rubber plug/wiring harness above the left tail light, zip tie it to the harness that leads to the third brake light via the left trunk hinge, then run it under the gray insulation/carpet, to the middle of the trunk, then down and around to the top front edge of the trunk lid. Had mine there for 3 years and it got perfect reception.
