i love my rx8, but dammit, what the hell is the deal with this engine flooding out. 2 months ago i had to have the thing towed to my work to be diag'd, and come to find out, the plugs were so full of unburned fuel they were toast. factory ngk plugs at my cost were $144. now, go to start the SOB up this morning, not even 2 months later. same story, no start, just my engine cranking.... now beings the plugs are pretty much brand new im going to try to de flood the engine by the procedure of cranking it over for about 8 seconds, letting it rest, then cranking it again. just keep trying that process over and over until the thing starts. but seriously, this is rediculous, i've owned the car 5 months and im contempleting getting rid of it if this is going to be a reoccurance...

anyone else have this happen to them more then once?

 

The flooding issue is you.....

Do some reading on what causes it before you come on here bitching about the car

And if your cost for plugs is $144...you need to find a more honest supplier...they retail for $80 at many vendors on here

 

I had my car for over 5 years and never once flooded my car. Most f the time when the car flood it's user error.

 

He probably got them from the dealer, I think that is their MSRP

The ignition coils are a known weakness and there are coil swaps and upgrade systems available. Look into that. With our system, I have TRIED to flood the engine. 10 seconds of cranking with no spark. Attach the ground wire and, viola, the engine starts right away.

I've had my car 2 years. Flooded it once by accident. Never done it again.

 

yup,, all true^^ i deflooded mine myself and dried out the plugs. never gonna do that again. if it happens again try to deflood it yourself, shops are gonna try to get you to buy new plugs even if their barely fouled at all. just dry em out and use some brake cleaner and a wire brush. GL

 

Hello McFly? OE...............Operator Error.
Most likely the coils.
Bought used car, flooded it, went and had plugs changed and were fouled due to weak spark/unburnt fuel. Never addressed why plugs fouled and expected a different outcome? We could blame the dealer or shop here I suppose.
Anyone wanna bet on how long before CAT goes?

Bingo. If you have flooding issues, just follow what posts say about the car. It doesn't like to be started and stopped frequently, and if you MUST do that, give it a quick burst to 3k rpm before shutting it off.

Why don't you just go cry about it... And actually learn and expect quirkiness from this type of car..oh and a learning curve if you've never owned a rotary powered vehicle before

5 years of ownership here never had a single flood.

so lets see where the problem is ...

the problem is ... YOU ?

 

1. Learn to deflood yourself. When you're good at it, it takes only about 30 min max. And you won't even need to remove the spark plugs, etc.

2. You can NEVER just turn the car on and turn it off. When I have to move my car, I'll drive it down the street and back.

3. Keep the faith. Too early to give up. I bet you love your car other than the flooding, right?

I wouldn't come back either, after this reception. He got a lot of good replies, but there were enough offensive cracks to pretty much spoil the mood.

Sure, his post had an edge to it, but why couldn't the first reply have been something like "Have you been turning it off cold?"

well the owner works 12 hour days and has a life outside a forum. so here i am at a later time.

its an 04' gt 6spd.
full racing beat dual exhaust
mazdaspeed intake
64,000 miles

as far as i know this is the only 2 engine mods on it.
and i did buy it used. and i only know service records on the car because the dealership i work for sold me it. come to find out, on the used car inspect, mazda reccomended the plugs and wires changed. cheap *** general managers denied the work to be done. so there i was two months ago, brand new to a rotary and this vehicle when it didnt start. got it towed to work, put it up on the rack and after removing the plugs, turn them over and fuel dumped into your hand, they were completely shot as well. so, i replaced the plugs with NGK factory replacements. due to the fact i work at a honda dealership, mazda didnt cut our parts department much of a deal on them and charged full blown factory price.

yesterday, i tried deflooding it myself and saving money. and you know what, it worked! i removed the 20a fuse for the fuel pump, cranked it over a couple of times with that out to the point of the car wanting to start. then installed the fuse back into place, turned the key and she started. the deflooding technique is a piece of cake.

and to answer your question, yes i love this car its a blast. i just would like to find out why it flooded. i NEVER shut the engine off cold, it does get cold at night here and in the mornings its kinda hard starting but i have no clue why it is my fault its flooding...
