Should I, or shouldn't I?

I think the opportunity has risen for me to trade my AT 2006 rx8 with 12k miles on it for a MT 2004 rx8 with 30k miles on it... straight trade. I currently have a VR 8 and this one is BB... and I always liked BB a little more. And obviously I would rather have the MT 8. Just don't know if the age difference is worth it... it's not too bad because at the rate I'm going I'm putting over 20k miles on my car a year... so it would be just like I had it for another year. I might even get an insurance break since it won't be red.

My dad's cosigned on the car with me, so would he have to be present for me to do anything?

I'm excited at the potential of getting a MT 8 so any help would be appreciated.

Don't do it. You'll be going from a car with a bumper to bumper warranty to a car without one. (or soon to expire). Also the '04's have been having more engine replacement issues. Don't trade your newer car for an older one.

Agree with Shaunv74. If you want an MT and if you have some extra money on the side forget the straight trade and just trade your car in and get a newer MT.

04's in general might have more engine replacements because they have higher miles on average??
Maybe it's just a matter of time for the 05's and up to had replacements...

Guys I'm so down right now.

The 04 was gone. They had an 05 MT in VR... only 16k miles on it. That's 4k more than mine... did the test drive and all that. They went into the finance office and said they'd STILL do a straight trade. I'm cosigned with my dad so I had to call him up... I thought it would be a no-brainer... but he just doesn't understand cars.

He said a very firm "no" and made me feel really bad for even wanting to do it... how do I convince HIM that a MT is better? This car is only one year older and has about 2 months more miles on it (for my driving). It also has DSC, traction control, and foglights which mine does not have...

UGH!

MT= lot faster and funner. It would be hard to persuade dad to trade in a much newer, "seemingly" nicer, fully warranteed car based on the fact that the only real diff in his mind is that the MT is much faster and is more likely to get his son in an accident. He doesnt understand it from your perspective, a driver's perspective.

Your Dad is thinking economically. You're being taken for a ride by the dealership. Of course they'll give you a straight trade on an older car for a newer one. Think for a minute. You should find out what your car is worth compared to the older one. It's a whole extra year of depreciation. Now if they gave you a trade plus the difference in depreciation your Dad would probably sign up for that.

dealers are in business to make money - which they would do on this deal . The OP just wants an MT . To lose a few $1000 on paper may not be as important to him

Agreed. But it probably is to his Dad who is co-signing his loan that apparently still needs to be paid off.

It's not a loan... the car is paid for. The title is just in both of our names.

fine. My point is still the same. I am suggesting that the financial issue is your Dad's concern and you should come up with a solution to address it so your Dad will give you the okay. EG: Find out the difference in value between the car you want and car you have and try to get the dealer to cover the difference. Or find out why your Dad doesn't want you to do it and come up with a solution so he says yet.

I dont know what your age is. Late teens or early 20s? I am 24 by the way...not to bad

Anyway, coming to the point, Looks like your equation is 05 MT = 06 AT + 4K? Thats a pure rip off. I think in 06 AT has more than 200 HP and it has 6 speed sport tronic shifter. I wouldnt take all this trouble for a little more fun + you do have lot of years ahead, cars are only going to get better in future!

That doesn't make sense... Why would you trade a new car for an old car??? Manual or not big deal. Just use the manual mode in the AT. An 2004 has tons of problems that needed all those fixes. The problems were all worked out and 2006 don't have the same problems.

BIG...BIG mistake...DON"T DO IT!

04 has more engine problem simply because

They suffered the most damage, Cuz they came out first. the problem show up after the engine got their slow and painful death. the fix wasnt *out* until about 1 and 1/2 year model later.

Dont get 04. avoid them. but try to trade it in with MT.
