Saying Hello, new RX-8 Owner

Hi everyone,

I just bought a 2006 RX-8 Shinka White, automatic, with 100 miles on it. It's got no previous owner, so it's technically new. I chose not to take the dealership warranty thinking that since it had no previous owner, it should technically not have used the manufacturer warranty. Am I wrong in this thinking, and if so, should I look into an extended warranty?

I'm also a damn young driver, and made a mistake on a local road and hit my right rearview mirror. Only the cover is broken, the rest of the mirror is fine. I live in New York City, can anyone give me a suggestion as to where I should take it to get it fixed?

I've read up a little bit on this forum on how to take care of the car, and I hope I can be pretty active on this forum!

Manufacturer warranty begins the date the car is sold to its FIRST (non-dealer) owner.

So, if you are indeed the first owner, your car's warranty began today.

Avoiding the dealer extended warranty is almost always a good idea anyhow because you can buy one yourself for cheaper. But, regardless, the RX-8 has a special 100,000 mile warranty on the engine itself. Since an extended warranty really only covers your engine and your transmission primarily, it doesn't really make it worthwhile to buy one since Mazda is already covering your engine for such a long time. You'd be paying a lot of money for what would essentially just be a warranty on your transmission.

I posted one pic for now, I'll post more tomorrow.

This one doesn't show the damage to the passenger mirror yet =\

Here is what you get on a 2006 from Mazda....

Mazda warrants that new 2006 Mazda cars and trucks will be free of defects with normal use and prescribed maintenance for 48 months or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. Ordinary maintenance items, adjustments, parts subject to normal wear and certain other items are excluded. This transferable "limited warranty" is included on all new Mazda vehicles sold and serviced in the United States.

You need to get proof that you are the first owner, other wise the warranty could be up this year!

Who do I submit the information to? Is there a place to call or visit?

Also, does anyone make spare Mazda passenger seat mirrors? Not the glass, the mirror itself? Or should I be looking to replace both mirrors with an aftermarket set instead?

Since it's a new car, I'm not entirely sure what to do on the engine oil. Should I get it changed out to a synthetic immediately? I'm going to ask the dealer what they used on it before.

Just call up Mazda Customer Service, the number should be on the site or on some piece of paper you got when you bought it, and ask what the status of your warranty is. This soon, if you are indeed the first owner, they probably won't have any information at all yet in the system -- which is a good thing.

As for the mirror... check the dealer. If the price seems outrageous you might consider asking around at some salvage yards in your area. There isn't much available in the aftermarket. I can't speak for how easy it would be to fix on your own though.

I'll look in the manual for the number, thanks!

I found a couple of mirror replacements, and I'm not entirely sure about them. I checked the website, Mazdaparts.com in the vendors forum, and if the dealer asks for too much, I might just buy the replacement mirrors and ask a carshop to put it on. Does that sound like a good idea?

I'm a very new driver, as I stated in the original post, and I didn't trust myself with manual yet. I am not so bold as to believe I can jump into a manual sports car and immediately drive away unscathed lol.

Then you sir, are a brave man

I will get a manual in the future, when I am much more settled in my driving. I don't think learning manual is hard, but to pay attention to that extra few more things would kill me right now.

Welcome Jin!

check your local area forum for more local people in your area - try and attend a couple of meets and see if you can familiarize(sp) yourself with your area. I'm sure you'll find people willing to help you out over there

Thanks :D

I'll check out the NE subforum for the meets. I'll try to attend a few when I'm more settled in with the car. Right now, I'm still very jittery from just knowing I own one now lol.

heh - i think a lot of us went through that jitter stage. I know i did. It was hard refraining from punching it but just stay cool and break your engine in properly. Don't be one of those knuckle heads that smash on the car all day and not take care of it. Just remember, you treat it well...and it'll treat you well

I try to be as gentle as I can, except for the hit to my passenger side mirror... But generally I'm pretty light on the throttle, and I'm practicing fuel saving methods.

I do aim for 9k rpm at least once when I go onto a highway though, since I heard on this forum that it'll clear out the carbon.

I'll get that info on wednesday. I'm going to the dealer's maintenance shop to get the inspection (can't do inspections in NY on Sunday), so I'll get the service history as well.
