I prefer the rear of the S2, but overall I agree - the S1 is far more attractive. S2 grille doesn't "go" with the rest of the car. And the S2 side vents stick out like a sore thumb.

Watch... 20 years from now, the S1 will be the 8 most fondly remembered because, I suspect, it's closest to the designer's original concept. S2 looks like someone else designed parts of the car, and they don't quite go together, do they?

I prefer the S2 better since it looks way more aggressive then the S1 plus I have an S2 R3 so Im a little biased haha

 

personally, I hate the front bumper. Its the similar front bumper to the 2009 Mazda 3 and Mazda 5 over here. Standard bumper, its just fugly. Rear end though is just, perfect. Everything else is perfect, but the front bumper.

Not true, plenty of FB's on the streets still, all it takes is a loving owner with cash to keep them going. And they are over 30 years old. Not to mention the s1 has the aftermarket advantage and a larger year range for used parts vs the s2.

Also the s1 out sold the s2, so finding junker cars for parts will also be easier.

 

I like the look of the S2. Its unique in the fact that there are no other cars (competitors) that look anything like it. Its bold and different when lined up next to other cars in this generation. Unfortunately being different will always spawn controversy with those who want something different n' those who want more of the same....

S2 more manly without needing a kit to look great IMO. That being said, the MS rear diffuser and spoiler from the S1 is way better than the rear on the S2

 

OP is right. The front of the S2 (not R3) is hideous. And the steering wheel is terrible looking. S1 is much more aggressive looking. Front plates ruin both cars though. Which is why i don't run a front plate. But i have to admit the tail lights are much better on S2.

 

A few tasteful mods here and there make a world of difference...

 

The only thing i don't like on an S2 is the rear tail lights, but the rest is just okay, the S1 looks way better though.

How'd you black out the chrome under the lights? Led bar looks good, what did you tie them into?

 

The chrome strips are held together by a couple of screws. Took them off and wrapped it in 3m carbon fiber vinyl. As for the LEDs, they are Philips 8-LED DRL with a separate control module that connects to the battery and turns on/off automatically when the engine is running/shut off. Really nice unit and OEM bright. There's also a single wire you can attach to any 12V+ source to turn off the LEDs (e.g. when headlights or fogs are on). Hope that helps.

 

I personally prefer the looks of the S1 more. If I were to buy another one, based on looks, I would probably still pick the S1. Both look good, especially with proper mods. I'll also agree that the S2 looks more aggressive in some ways. That said, I agree with the comment that it seems like the designs were added on, rather than all by the original designers. Some parts just don't seem to flow together as well.

 

Ill take the best of both worlds and say the S1 40th anniversary looks the best

this however looks BETTER than how the S1 wears the mazdaspeed front bumper, and gets rid of the stupid S2 smile.





I wanted to do this to my S2 before a corolla fucked it up for me... oh well. I liked my S2. But i LOVE my S1!!!

The R3 looks nice. I don't like the interior, and I don't like the tail lights. So no, you are not the only one! The regular S2 looks yucky to me.

 

Eric I agree I would LOVE the MS bumper on my s2. I really do not like the look of the stock one. I love everything else about my s2 though.

That said, I have the base model and I honestly don't see a huge difference between the base and the r3 bumper really. I dislike both of them.
