RYANSRX8 Crash, RIP RX8 :(
Indeed. Many people don't realize how safe the RX-8 is. They think it's just a sports car and then see the freestyle doors, which may turn some people away. In reality, there are many areas in the body structure that have been reinforced and designed to the highest levels of safety in mind.
no but really, i read the same thing, one of the most difficult cars to roll. surprised me too til they said it involved a turn with a change in elevation (i.e., a ditch)...that spells roll-over no matter what car you're in.
Just my opinion, but I think the Mazda engineers intentionally "overdid" the roof structure to make sure there were no questions about the ability to open up the whole side of the car with doors and still maintain the needed strength.
The parts will live on. . .
Glad your okay... This has got to be one of the safest cars on the road. Sacrifice itself to save the fleshy people inside.
Did you have traction control turned off? I've come close to sliding through a turn in the rain, but traction control took over and righted me before I could screw up any further.

Thank the engineers of the RX8 who did such an amazing job for your well being. notice how the roof is almost perfect? thats because of the way the roof was constructed, its really strong, and also really light.
here is the info on the roof.
The roof on the RX-8 has structural members that are constructed of nitride treated steel.
Nitriding fuses titanium to the steel with nitrogen through heat. This produces a very strong, yet lighter weight (2.2 lbs less than ordinary steel) roof and contributes to better handling.
sorry about your ride, but glad you are ok man.

Rollover

. Mazda Miata MX-5 Convertible
This affordable two-seat convertible starts at a base price of $21,750. Stability control is only available on the Grand Touring model of this vehicle. The MX-5 only has a 7% chance of rolling over in a single car crash, making its rollover rating 5 stars.
2. Mazda RX-8 4-DR
This four-seat coupe is base priced at $26,435. Stability control is available in all of the models except the Sport. This car has a 7% chance of rolling over in a one-car crash, giving it a 5 star rollover rating.
3. BMW Z4 Convertible
This powerful vehicle starts at a base price of $50,400. The Roadster model features a rollover protection system. This vehicle has an 8% chance being in a rollover car accident, which gives it a 5 star rollover rating.
4. Ford Mustang 2-DR
This timeless classic is base priced at $20,430. This vehicle has an 8% chance of rolling over in a one-car crash, giving it a 5 star rollover rating.
5. Honda S2000 Convertible
This two-seat roadster starts at a base price of $34,995. It has an 8% chance of rolling over in a single car crash, which gives it a perfect 5 star rollover rating.
So the rollover rating is based on the chance of rolling over and not the car's ability to withstand a roll-over?
That's weird. . . seems like giving a 5 star crash test rating based on the cars ability to avoid crashing. . . granted that would be ideal, but that doesn't always happen.

Yea, what Vyndictive said; If rollover rating is based on chance, that's retarded. Their so called "chance" is based on the physics of the vehicle and not when you screw up or something happens out of your control. I'm sorry but the Miata, BMW, and Honda would be at the bottom of the list in a real rollover, they're freaking convertibles = you likely dying if it rolls over.
Since they based it off that I'll have to say I won't even look at roll over ratings anymore. I'll look at crash safety and that's it.
