Is RX8 a wise choice to buy if you have no warranty?

OK did you come here so someone will say "OMG, GO FOR IT DUUUDDDEEE.. THATS SUCH A GREAT IDEAAAAAAAA!!!!" or did you come here for some advice?

If it's the former, "OMG, GO FOR IT DUUUDDDEEE.. THATS SUCH A GREAT IDEAAAAAAAA!!!!". If it's the latter, I think the advice is pretty clear that buying ANY used car with a salvage title is potentially (a) dangerous and (b) expensive. You might find a gem with a salvage title without a collision, and you might be able to repair it into working condition and thereby you might save some money, but the majority of posters here seem to agree that those 'might' decisions aren't worth the potential hassle, heartache, and trouble when your girlfriend 'reliable' and 'repaired' car gives her trouble or gets in an accident. Particularly one that has "DO NOT START" written on the window in chalk marker. I'd rather spend a little bit more for peace of mind and a warranty than save out now and pay it later in money, time and inconvenience.

... it is not a problem to sell rebuilt rx8 - they go for 10-11k on ebay

some salvage have very minimal damage...this is the one i am looking at:

Why is every one talking about salvage ... it is personal choice...
Because this is a forum and you asked for our opinion. Our opinion is that buying a salvage title is NOT a wise choise, add no warranty to that and its A STUPID CHOICE.

Truth hurts but buying salvage title vehicles is dumb. You could buy a non salvage MT Grand touring with under 50K miles for 10-12 grand right now.

But I guess spending 8-10 total after repairs for a salvage is a good deal

Think about it

no, the 8 is not a money pit... at least not on a clean title. Who knows with salvage. That's what we're saying.

And you said you can repair it to be structurally equal to a clean title? I call bs... we have one of the stiffest chassis available and I somehow doubt you could repair it back to that standard....

Heres 2 for under $12,000 with a clean title and under 60K miles.

Why pay 8-10K for a salvage title?

Again, thats plain STUPID.

Most of the salvage posts here are from people without experience with salvage cars. Since you've repaired some, we should figure that you know what you're doing at that end.

Answering your question... Nobody fully understands the engine failures. Failure rate is nowhere near what you'd think from the number of posts. The reasons aren't fully understood. Many people think it's due to the oiling system, which has been improved through reprogramming the PCM (last flash in '06) and more oil injectors ('09). Many think it's side seal failure, from carbon buildup in the ports. Carbon comes from either synthetic oil use (disputed by many) or driving too gently (a good belief). Some think it's random, due to the engines being hand assembled and therefore subject to errors in tolerances. Lots of people think it's because Mazda North America specifies too thin an oil.

My personal belief is that the frequency of engine failure is overblown. Probably higher than for a Honda (what make wouldn't be?), but not enough that I worry about it at all. I worry much more about getting T-boned by a drunk. And the RX-8 has enough power and handling to give me decent odds of avoiding that if I'm alert.

If an engine blows, you can get it rebuilt for a modest cost. Browse around the site for people's experience with that. Just one more factor to think of when figuring the cost saving vs risk. Also pay attention to what other major components (transmission, ECU, etc.) cost if they turn out to have been damaged.

Ken

Thank you... that is what i been looking for
... i did look in to the cost of of engines and could pick one up with 8k mi with 3 month warranty for $1.7k - i can replace it my self no problem.

Yeah it really depends on why it is a salvage title if just stolen then you're good etc and the engine design is fine just make sure she drives it like it should b driven not like a normal engine multiple redline runs will not harm this engine that's what it's made for

My girl is the one who is paying for the car...
I am suppose to pick out a good deal car for her that is not more then $9k final cost ( it is between rx8 and tiburon depending on the deal) and she suppose to pick out the ring that she likes, which i will have to buy for her.
My Tiburon's for sale... low mileage and great aftermarket!!!!
now to not be accused of thread jacking... say no to salvage! (imho)
