As much as I love my 8, it's no Porsche—though the fact that, in some ways, it can be favorably compared to one says a lot about the 8.
As I recall, Mazda said the 911 was their original benchmark when they were designing the 8; its dimensions are (were) about the same. Mazda's very proud of the fact that they can seat four adults in the same sized sports car that Porsche seats only two (+2).
No person who really knows cars considers the Boxster a "chick car"; that's absurd. It's considered one of the best balanced, best handling automobiles of all time. And let me get this straight… "convertibles are for girls"?!? How old are you—19?
Finally, when I see someone with a Boxster or Cayman, I don't think they're "cheap"—I think the same thing I think when I see someone with an 8: they appreciate good cars.

Porsche is supposibly (sp?) going to be putting a bit more hp in the base 911 carerra, so I would not be too surprised to the the Current Boxster and Caymen S engine wind up being the base motore at 295HP and the new S models getting the current 911's 320HP mill. I have been saying the Cayman S need about another 30 or so HP to make it a really fun can and hopefully Porsche will deliver.

How can you say that the Cayman S needs another 30HP to be really fun?
Why not 35HP? Why not 50HP? Why not 15HP?
Fact is even if you upgrade the Cayman S to 350HP, people will always say ''oh it just needs 20 more HP and at 370HP it will be perfect''.
I think it all depends on what you were driving before the Cayman S. If your previous car was an RX-8, the Cayman S will feel extremely fast since it's a full 1 second quicker to 60 and on the quarter mile.
I had an S2000 before and to me even a 986 S with 250HP feels faster and an improvement in the HP department.
But try telling to a Z06 Corvette owner or someone who had a modded STI that the 295HP Cayman S is fast enough...

Wha?! I always thought the Cayman reeked of "can't afford a 911". If they were priced the same, I'd take a 911 over a Cayman in a heartbeat. Heck, I'd take a gently used 997 generation 911 over a new Cayman S.

Comparing the 8 to a Boxster is a joke because in real life the 8 doesnt even come close to a Boxster and would be better compared with a civic....i get it now! Ur so smart. 944 one of mt favorite cars.
having owned a 944 and two 993s in the past, I can say that anytime I saw a 944, 924, or boxter, I didn't see "OMFG A PORSCHE", instead I saw, "ah, a cheap porsche". The 944 handled well too, but it ends up being a discount car.
If you're going for brand name, getting the low end cuts off any gain you might have had.
I still own a RX8. No more Porsche.

Being an ex-porsche mechanic who drove these cars day in and day out, I must say that handling wise our 8's are right along side a boxster. When I first bought the 8, the FIRST thought that popped in my mind was "Damn, I think this thing handles as good or possibly better than a boxster."
A boxster is definitely a benchmark for handling performance even within the Porsche community. The boxster is a very stable car compared to even the 911 due to it's mid-engine configuration. 911's you have to worry about the *** end coming around on you if you let off the throttle to fast in a turn due to it's rear engine design.
As far as the stereotype of it being a girls car.....I must say that the majority of people that owned boxsters at the dealership I worked at were female.
As far as the cheapness factor or "poor mans Porsche," I think that all has to due with where in the world you are from. I worked at a dealer in South Florida, so Porsches were a dime a dozen and driven as daily drivers. It wasn't uncommon to see Boxsters come in with 80+ thousand miles, dirty *** interiors with McDonalds bags and cups, along with other garbage in them. All performance aside, a Boxster in S. Florida is considered a girls car, a 911 even is if it's not the S model and even that is run of the mill. Unless you're driving a 911 Turbo or better down there, it's nothing special.
Now in Chicago where I live now, seeing a Porsche isn't as common and due to the winters most people only drive thier Porsche when the weather is nicer and they seem to take care of them more and put way less miles on them. So you would definitely get a lot more respect driving a Boxster in Chicago as opposed to S. Florida, California, parts of Texas, etc.
As far as rattles go.......take it from me.....Boxsters and Porsche's sports cars in general are horrible for them. I can honstly say that 50% of the tickets I got for the sports cars had a line for a rattle complaint, no matter what else the vehicle was in for.

Look dude, if a BoxSter and a 911 are girls cars in the Florida that you came from, what do they consider an RX8? What exactly do those macho people in Florida consider a "mans" car? Not trying to start anything, but, come on. Listen to what you're saying, or should I say writing.

As for Mazdas is like asking if you would rather drive a Miata or an RX8. I'll take the 8 and that's why I'm on this forum and not a miata forum right now.
