Probably a troll but I will do this anyways.

Stay away from the few non crashed rx8s still left, go by a missle or go crash a 350z.

lack of low down torque is gunna be a serious handicap if you want a decent drift car . a turbo is about the only way you are going to address that .

Momentum cars aren't great to start drifting.
Buy an old bimmer to get started. It's cheaper and a better supported platform

my take, an rx8 isnt a good begineers car to drift in. You prolly need to buy a lot of stuff to make it a good drift car. Have some dignity man lol get like a s14, 240sx, 300, evo O rally, lancer, subaru wrx (sti) maybe a 350z but your a begineer you said so pick something i named or something similar.

But Dont think im dumb if you dont like this, cause this is just my opinion.

Fwd cars for drift? What?

I can get the car to oversteer a bit, but I don't really want to try and drift it. Besides, I like my tires.

The rx8 isnt a bad drift car IF (and thats a big IF) you know wat you are doing. which i assume you dont. The power band in the rx8 is not ideal for drifting but it does have plenty of power to keep the wheels spinning one they break lose.

If you want to do the nooby thing, as you are entering a turn put it in a low gear, clutch in, hand brake hard, full throttle. and drop the clutch.

I dont drift because i think its stupid, but i do love the occasional oversteer turn. pulling into my works entrance is the best. I come off a 2 lane road with a 55mph speed limit, then turn left into a VERY wide driveway. (probably about 4 lanes) I always cut the corner close and just flick the back out, once i make it onto the drive way, the road takes a left again after about 35 yards. I have only once been able to make the full turn but man its fun.

I don't try and drift... I'm still pretty new to RWD, but drifting isn't in the books for me. I know where the powerband is... LoL I do drive the car. I just like keeping the tires pretty well in contact with the road.

I remember seeing keiichi and his followers drifting on a tuned rx8 (I don't know to what degree it was modified, and not the 500hp one) but it looked pretty close to stock to me, correct me if I'm wrong.

the thing with rx8 is that it handles very good yet not good for drifting because the fast steering. you want something lazy and soft to drift.

@yolunn u talking about the white one in BMI/Hot Version?

@OP

Imo you wanna get something like a Nissan S15 for drifting if you are really serious because:

1. Its light and handles great
2. More than enough torque for breaking rear traction easily
3. Lots of parts to mod for more power, extra steering angle, etc later on
4. Higher availiability of parts when something breaks

The car can drift sure, but you'll need experience to do it. As a beginner, you'll probably just tear it up. Parts aren't cheap for it compared to the more popular drift cars. Your $700 will barely get you a set of good tires.

If you're new to drifting, i'd recommend getting something cheap first. An old 240, an older 3 series BMW, an FC, or something else that RWD and can be picked up for a couple grand. You won't feel bad scraping the wall and tearing up bumpers while you learn.

Yes that one

I don't mean to hi jack but any drift schools people recommend? Skip barber seems good; a tad bit pricey but they offer instructions on an 8 and I'm considering it. But if there is an option less than 700 it may be another option for the OP.

Edit:
To the OP.. here's what the rx8 drifts like by a novice/intermediate. No FI. It can be seen that the 8 does have trouble kicking the rear out at some points.
