i've had the luck of driving a Z06 and i can tell you, the only thing you get out of owning a corvette is saying "Dude, i own a corvette!"
At the end of the day... /yawn it's no big deal. yes they are nice but i'd rather put money into an RX8 and make up the differences in performance that people may say exist between the two. of course you will never crank out the same amount of pure power as a vette from an RX8 but then no matter what you do with a vette, you wont get the comfort and driveability of an RX8.
Vettes are status symbols. Plain, Simple, Period. Does your ego need that much of a boost or would you rather put that effort into giving your Wankle a boost?

Buy an RX-8 and drop an LS2 engine into it. Viola, a vette-eater, 4-seater for the same price as a vette.

lmfao!!!!
you do... ummm.... realize that the vette only weighs about the 200lbs more than an rx-8, right? then you're going to drop a heavier engine into the rx-8 and it will become a vette-eater?

I'd take a C5 Z06 hands down. Lots of aftermarket support, and lord behold, you might actually get more than 3 horsepower per mod O_O
If you don't use your back seats a lot, a Corvette isn't much different than an RX8. Has a nice trunk, simple yet very effective engine, and if left relatively stock and maintaned should last forever and a day. Both cars have 50/50 weight distribution, both weigh about the same, its just the vette puts out better numbers. More torque and horsepower duh, but gas mileage should be much better. My uncle has a C5 Z06 with new headers, cam, racing clutch, lighter flywheel, etc. Goes so fast on the highway your feet start to go numb from the blood getting pushed back up into your body. His throws down ~500 bhp. Its also his wives daily driver and she has no problems with it. And on the week ends he drives it to the track, abuses it to no end, and drives it back with the AC on no problem.
Top Gear and such have really made this bad image of the vette. All the idiots on youtube do is quote Clarkson. 'Leaf springs?!'. Too bad none of them could tell you how the leaf springs in a vette are positioned. Oh, and you can easily get a baseline C5 for ~22K, and you could easily keep a budget of >30K and make it as fast as a C5 Z06. Or hell you could just spend ~30K on the new Camaro which comes stock with over 400 horsepower like a C5 Z06. A vette is in a different galaxy than the RX8. Pointless comparison.

Most of the time Corvettes are driven by boulevard cruisers who drive so slow they might as well be driving a Cobalt.
I suppose if I was looking for maximum acceleration for the price in a new car, I'd consider it. I'd rather drive a BMW 335i for the same price.

I hope Mazda makes an RX-8 with a 26B PP so we can shut the Corvette people up once and for all. But nooo, then you'll complain about reliability, like that matters when you've got the best wanking material ever right in your engine bay :P

Here is the response from MT on why the vette was not included in the "best handling comparo"
"Guys, the reason there's no Vette is simple - we ran the Z06 in last year's test, and it was beaten by the Porsche 911 GT3.
This year's line up is all-new (as it will be every year) and while we would have liked to have had the GT3 along as a benchmark, Porsche wasn't able to come to the party, so we made do with a 911 Turbo.
Yes, we've driven the ZR1, but GM hasn't let one out of its Proving Ground yet, and won't for some months. Rest assured, the ZR1 will be in the line up for next year's test. Like you, we can't wait to see what it will do."
