I felt Dean's critique of the RX8 was fair but I think what triggers some frustration with various RX8 owners is the perspective of Dean's post. I don't think any of the information Dean posted was wrong, but instead shows what kinds of elements are important to him in a car.

Some people are interested in that low end torque punch, ipod, seat warmers, GPS etc etc. I loved playing with the CX7 with it's electronics package it was really neat! Still, it really comes down to what you want out of the vehicle.

I can only use myself as an example, but I think my viewpoint fits with most people here. I bought the base sport. It's got the sport package cause it's a manual but no bose, no HID's, no sunroof, no appearance package or anything. The car was smooth but I was interested in performance and willing to sacrifice ride quality. Since then my suspension makes trucks feel like they are floating on air.

Sure, I agree that for the cost of a G37, you could purchase a Turbo kit and have a shop install it for less than the difference in the vehicles. I would also agree that a turbo is a more rewarding experience because you are more involved with the vehicle.

Still, some people just want a pleasant driving experience with neat toys for entertainment and a little power for those highway on and off ramps. I doubt the OP is going to race, track, or maybe even spiritedly drive his G37. No doubt he gets plenty of enjoyment the way it is.

I think the worth of the RX8 as a whole is greater than the sum of it's parts. I think what gets people angry is they don't feel the car is being judged on the correct items or from the right perspective. Saying the car is inferior because it lacks electronic gadgets ignores the purpose of the car. Some cars NEED those things to distract the driver from a bad experience.

The RX8 is built around a driving experience. It's meant to scare you but scare with a smile. It's designed to let you go to the edge of the car's capabiltiies but do so safely. It's capable of making every trip fun and exciting without sending you to jail.

Adding anything to the RX8 would simply distract people from the best qualities of the car. Hell, I rarely even listen to the radio anymore cause I love the hum of the engine and the resonance of my exhaust.

But that was the whole point of his post and you've also just stated it. He is only giving HIS perspective. His perspective says nothing about yours or anybody else's. He's not subjecting you to feel a certain way..he's telling you how he feels, there's a world of difference.

Further, any comments verging on the negative towards the Rx8 are distinctly qualified with a 'IMO'. .. IN MY OPINION. He's not telling people how they should feel. Why the hell is everyone reading more into what he intended??? it's not like he gets up says the Rx8 is crap because it has blah blah. Contrarily, he gives it glowing praise and references some well known attributes/flaws.

If you came and told me that the RX8's handling was poor, styling was ugly, and overall performance sub par I would have serious issue with that. Show me a car in the $25,000 - $35,000 range that has the capabilities of the RX8 while maintaining a great ride and a very individual look.

Still, all the OP was saying was he wanted more toys and that nice punch into your seat. The RX8 will throw you into your seat but you gotta EARN it! Row those gears!

I've seen plenty of these "sold my 8, peace out" threads and some of the stuff people pick on is pretty pointless. I think this was a fair review but I will argue the OP is looking for different qualities than the rest of us. To each his own.

I've noticed myself that RX-8 owners tend to be...., jackasses. Seriously. It's like this car creates a cult about itself, and sometimes even *I* feel like buying a Honda Civic just to get away from the community.

Reading through I think what triggers responses are that he was stating the obvious and thinking it's a revelation. He didn't like the HP, torque, and lack of creatue comforts from a 35k sports car built in 2004 so he bought a 45k sports car built in 2008. Shockingly 4 years of car development has led to some improvements in creature comforts and even more of a difference in HP/Torque...

More power to him but it's about as much a revelation as the sun setting in the West.

Frankly I don't know why people even bothered to reply. Wish him well, congratulate him on spending 45k on a car he can drive to and from work, and let it go.

G37's are boats just like the New skyline.. EWW i dont like them..

now i like s2k's but too tiny for my.. im a big guy.. I think i would rather ger a M3 instead of a G37.. I dont really like them.. and they arent really that fast.. well compared to a stock 8 they are but little things to the 8 will put it evenly matches..

But i feel you on that man.. sometimes you get older and want something a little more luxurious.

I cant wait till another Rx something comes out and looks nicer and is faster.. the 8 is a turtle when you compare it to its other competitors int he straight line..

come to think about it antyone agree that the 8's kinds look like a turtle

As a former G35 coupe owner and hopeful future RX8 owner, here are my comments:

Infiniti makes nice cars. The G35 is not a sports car and the G37 is even less of a sports car (which is completely fine if your are not looking for a sports car). My biggest complaint about my G35 was the weight. The car could be so much better if it weighed a couple hundred pounds less (ala the 350z). The G37 weighs several hundred pounds MORE than the G35, which negates any power increases added by the extra .2 liters. I can't stand the idea of a heavy car. Weight hurts every aspect of performance (braking, accelerating, and handling all suffer).

Having said that, the G35/37 is a very nice car. No question about that. However, it's too much of a luxury cruiser for me (and it's gotten WAY to pricey for what you get, for north of $40k that car should weigh less and have more power or at least a dual clutch setup). Too much focus on gizmos and toys and not enough on the driving experience for those of us who are more passionate about that aspect of a car.

P.S. - My mom just got an Infiniti EX35 and it is AWESOME. It has every gizmo imaginable with lots of space (for it's size) and is quick (thank you VQ).

P.P.S. - I don't think it's fair that people complain about the torque in the RX8. It's a wankle engine. It does exactly what it is designed to do. It's light and creates tons of power per liter. It would be like complaining about the VQ for being soo much heavier than the rotary engine (well duh it's a six cylinder combustion engine with WAY more parts and almost three times the size). You can't have your cake and eat it too. VERY light rotary engine > than heavy conventional piston engine

Yeah, lets don't harsh on the guy because he was honest. I for one, appreciate honesty on this forum, I don't want to see just slavish praise (although when it comes to the RX, I'M always ready to lay down the praise!), and I don't want to just see people slagging off the car about how it dosen't have enough power. This guys comments were heartfelt, and appreciated by this new member. cheers.

i think that about hits it for the g's. the original g35 coupe was a pretty decent sporty coupe, much like a 3-series coupe. but it's clear that it's built as an near luxury comfort cruiser. the g37 takes that a bit further. i guess now the gt-r is out, nissan can afford to soften the skylines further away from the sports and handling department

i can totally see, however, how the rx-8 would be a bit confusing for the general public. it's somewhat of a premium coupe and you can load it with leather and cd changer and seat warmer, etc. that makes the 8 almost seem like a bmw 3-series coupe or lexus is analog, ie the yuppie car. on the other hand, it's also like a big 4-seat hardtop miata or s2000. a light, high-strung, rotary sports car. so it has qualities of both and many of us see it more for the latter whereas much of the general car-buying public see it for the former. hence, the ensuing criticisms

but to each his/her own. the 8 is obviously somewhat of a niche car. and just as some of us dislike heavy luxury cruisers, others dislike spartan sports cars. i'd hate it if the rx-8 community acquired a reputation as mean and defensive....like the z people =P

I wouldn't say RX8 owners, I'd say most RX8 club Owners (most not all)
I respect those who can afford way nicer cars and has an 8 and loves the heck out of it.
but those who just has an 8 whether or not you can fork out more $$ on a car, if you think your car is the best for YOU thats awesome, congrats! but if you think you have THE BEST car IN GENERAL... you should be slapped back to reality.

Don't get me started on the GT-R... I was excited about it upon hearing about it initially. You cannot seriously expect someone to pay $70-80k or whatever they cost for a *sports* car that weighs between 3800-3900 lbs! It's almost two tons of overpriced junk! The engine is amazing, but what a complete disappointment that it's so heavy... For that kind of money the car should weigh in at no more than 3300 lbs and really closer to 3100. The GT-R is a japanese muscle car that happens to handle better than it should thanks to a computer. Just my 2 cents *getting of my soap box....

hmm...

997 turbo weighs up to about 3600 pounds. m6 weighs about 3800 pounds. even the r8 weighs 3400 pounds. i like lightweight, but that seems pretty hard to do for most manufacturers these days. the gt-r is pretty big and heavy, but it sure runs around tracks fast as hell. i'm assuming you know that it's tracked the 'ring in 7:29. and sure, it handles so well mostly 'cuz of the computer and high-tech gizmos, but isn't that what gt-r's have always been about?
