Hey guys,

I've been looking at the Royal purple, brand of oil. I've checked out their site and I've found out that its a high quality in oil and that its good for rotaries (it has a long history, of being used in rotaries). But the thing that's bothering me is that ITS SYNTHETIC! Based. I would like to know your thoughts on it. Is Royal purple really safe for rotaries? have anyone of you used it and how do you feel about it? Does your rotary feel/runs better after adding this HQ oil?

Long debate against Synthetic is 1) It attacked RX-7 seals and caused them to weaken and wear down faster etc. 2) Mazda hasnt "tested" synthetic for 8 use in the U.S.

Long story short is use RP if you have 12K or less miles on the engine id say because Synthetics DO have more cleaning agents than Conventional and you dont want to just change rapidly, it could cause oil leaks.

I use RP as my Oil because RP states on their website they've used it and say its fine in rotaries ( http://www.royalpurple.com/faqs-rotary.html ), I use 5w-30... I like synthetics better because one of the MAIN things that kills a rotary is carbon build up and synthetics burn cleaner to reduce carbon build up as well as protects better than conventional... I got a new engine at 48K so it was ok for me to use RP, plus the seals on the 8 are composed of a different material than the 7's seals so they wont be attacked from synthetics... thats just what ive read and believe... good luck

The only oil specifically made for rotary engines is full synthetic. Racing rotaries have been using synthetic oil for a long time. Lots of people use Royal Purple in rotaries, it's fine.

I used Royal Purple for at least 40,000 miles. I decided to switch because for the type of daily driving I was doing it felt like the oil broke down much faster than it should. This was noted by the vast difference I felt after doing an oil change and I don't have any scientific data to back up those claims.

I'd read up on what people have said regarding regular/synthetic oil and make up your own mind. I, myself, believe the weight and change interval is the most important factors.

I wish we could perform a scientific test where two identical 8's are driven an arbitrary distance (i.e., 75000 miles), one with RP and one with conventional, then tear them down to see what the insides look like.
