who can get the Retractable Key i got a 2004 model rx-8 brought from japan in japan the Retractable Key started in sep i brought it on aug and i ask them over the phone they said Retractable Key does work on 2004 car but they said some one needs to program the key they said just goto the close dealer to me

If you don't mind being the guinea pig by all means go to your dealer and ask them to program the 05 key for your 04 and see what happens or you could do a search and see what two dealers have already concluded let us know what your dealer says

You should be able to order the 05 key from your dealer. Seriously, read the retractable key threads below. Don't come crying about spending $80 on an 05 key that doesn't work with your 04.

The us dealers tried to code a retractable key in the 04 car and they don't work. I posted this yesturday at the Trussville vendors page.

"My understanding of the way the system works is that the "coil" reads the key ID number and sends that data to the "keyless Control Module" which then sends a signal to the ECU allowing the car to start. One of the trouble codes is "13" meaning the key ID cannot be read or there was a key ID registration error. The trouble shooting for that DTC states that:

"Any of the following items are touching or near the key head"
--Spare keys
--Keys for other vehicles equipped with an immobilizer system
--Any metallic object
--Any electronic device, or any credit or other cards with magnietic strips"

These items will interfere with the coil reading the ID # from the key. With the new 05 keys they have the remote keyless entry circuitry as part of the key, and this could be what is interfering with the 04 coil from reading the 05 key. That means that Mazda would have to have a new coil around the ignition to read the 05 key. So long as there are no changes in the keyless control module, we should be able to swap out the 04 coil with the 05 coil and then get a new set of 05 keys and have them coded."

why is key called 05 when the key came out at ike sep 04 ?? i got my car on the aug this year so around 4 month sorry this may sound like a dumb question to you guys but i just want to know why you call the key 05 key

 

Yikes dude, just go to yer local dealer in NZ and buy the dang thing for example

 

It's called the 05 key because it's the key to the 05 model year RX-8 you know what I mean

 

If you want an 05 key to function w/your Rx8 youll need an 05 Rx8.

 

I ordered the 05 key. it came in today but the remote part did not (key comes in 2 parts) we are going to try programming the key tomorrow without the remote not attached to see if it will work. I will post fiindings tomorrow (Friday 10-15) or Sat. for sure.
