Talking reliable FI

so for our 8's to actaully have reliable Forced induction added,...... what kind of heavy mods would we need ??? stronger side seals maybe ? what else?

ne1 know all the little bits and peices that would need to be changed out?

Not sure about this, but when helped a friend turbo kit his 13B way back in 1986 (it was a 1985 RX-7 GSL-SE), it was strictly bolt-on - no additional parts or engine internal mods needed.

I would bet that a reasonable amount of forced induction, be it turbo or supercharged would be tolerated without engine reinforcement. But I'm not the expert here at all.

Then you are probably going to have to run 10+ psi of boost.
I'm guessing (since I don't have much experience with Rotaries) that you'll need :

- upgraded fuel delivery (fuel pump, injectors)
- upgraded apex seals
- upgraded cooling (radiator, intercooler, oil cooler)
- computer (either piggy back or aftermarket)
- upgraded exhaust system
- custom exhaust manifold
- reasonable size turbo
- custom pipework under the hood

.......the list goes on and on.

A rotary expert feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Yup, this all sounds fair - for sure you'd have to have a remapped ECU, and for that kind of juice, definitely fuel delivery, cooling, exhaust (would be standard with a Turbo kit however), possibly ignition (hotter/higher energy spark, etc.

At what price, horsepower?

400hp in a car this weight... scary. :D

From what I hear (we were stood around discussing this at a show on Sunday) the 8's internals aren't far different from a 7's. The 8's apex seals are in fact better and some 7 modders plan to use them, so I don't think you'd need to change anything in there.

The clutch feels weak to me as it is, so I think I'd do that first.

This car seems to get very hot even for an NA so cooling an FI conversion will be challenging...

Some tuning companies have done it already - have a Google.

Engine Management is the only problem right now, everything else can be fixed with a die grinder.

- There is nothing wrong with the apex seals.
- There is a lot wrong with the fuel system.
- There is something wrong with the design of one of the ports.
- There is nothing wrong with the side seal, its the port in question (easy fix).

I don't feel like typing everything again and again, go here and start reading on page 6.

Maybe it would be more feasible and reliable to simply street port the engine? Anyone know how much can be gained from that?
