Quick Question

What does it mean to lug the engine? Someone wrote something about it in the Do's and Dont's but didn't elaborate.

Example would be like crusing along at 40 mph in 4th gear at only 2000-2500 rpms....your are "lugging" along.

Moral of the story: Keep rpm's up at or above 3500 while cruising (i keep at 4k) at any speed and between shift points. Except of course if ur engaging in some spirited driving and/or cruising at anything above 75-80 mph.

Uhh.. no.

Lugging the engine means traveling in too high a gear, so that the engine is straining. If you're cruising along at a steady 40 or 50 or 60mph, no incline, no traffic, no need to accelerate, you can cruise at 3000 rpm without lugging the engine. (And if you need to accelerate for a hill, or to pass - or just want to have fun - downshift as necessary.) If you always kept RPMs at 3500 or above, you'd never use 6th gear! (Unless you were speeding, i.e. above 65 mph).

^^say what? Always heard other way around dog. I think we are mixed up in Semantics, but trying to convey same thing.

I understood it as cruising at too low of rpms in too high of a gear and accelerating without downshifting, creating the "lugging".

I thought lugging the engine was using too high of a gear when a lower gear would be more appropriate; ie trying to pass @ 55 mph on an incline in 6th gear

Well, as long as we're asking questions like this... what is a "MOP"? (In terms of cars now, spare the wash-your-floors jokes...)

I'm just disagreeing with what RPM you can cruise at without lugging. We agree on what lugging is. Sorry for the confusion.

No way! So when I'm in 6th doing 50mph thats not good?
So I would have to stay in say 4th doing 50mph? Now my MPG is realy going to suck!

yup, definitely don't cruise below 3k on the freeway... your engine will love you for it, and the redline a day is a true moto.
