My nephew paints sports cars and also does a car every year for SEMA.

From what I can see the car has been repainted.

There is a high probability the owner consistently ran the car low by two quarts.

That will wear out the seals.

I've seen your issue on a couple of cars.

CAR fax means ****.
One can have a major accident. Repair it. Sell it before it even shows up on Car Fax.

If you have owned several cars, I'm surprised you believe in Carfax.

It's common for a car to have a scratch or minor imperfection. Then the new owner complains and the dealer re-paints it. That's most likely what happened to your vehicle.

If you are a car guy and have owned several cars.. You should be smart enough to know you can not judge a manufacturer or car type by a used vehicle, as you have NO idea what the previous owners did to the car.

Your issues are NOT normal.

Take it to your local club meet. They will be able to help you more than the dealer.

Chances are the engine has a side seal failure on one of the rotors.

OP, you might want to pull the spark plugs, and see if one is oil fouled.
If you're lucky, you will see that evidence.
That would be the source of your oil consumption, and bad gas mileage too.

Your only real choice is to get the engine compression tested to see if one of the rotors has lower compression than the other. You might wind up being one of the few Series 2 engines to get replaced on the forum if it tests out of spec.

But your oil consumption is not normal.
Neither is your paint defect.

Sorry you're not happy with the ownership experience, but it looks like you just picked up a bum car.

Just out of curiosity, what's the build date on your door sticker?
That would at least let us keep an eye out for other cars with similar build dates to see if they have the same problems.

BC.

Would you mind posting more complete pictures of your car? The pictures you posted don't quite fit a stock 8. Wingznut pointed this out to me. Compare to the non-R3 2009:

and the R3 (which wasn't grey at all)

^ agreed, like a good puzzle, I can't for the life of me see how that picture fits on the car as described. There are no areas like that. Stange.

Indeed, on a stock RX-8 it is impossible to take such a picture because this kind of bodypart dos not exist.
The only possibility is a picture of (for me unknown) aftermarket modifications on the RX-8..........

That looks far too dark to be the silver color for an S2, not to mention, it doesn't look like any part of the car from any angle i can think of. It looks more like TG from an early S1.

OP, you're gonna have to post full car pics, or something zoomed out so we can see where you're talking about.

I bought my 09 RX-8 back in Feb and have been daily driving ever since. I knew it wasn't going to get very good gas mileage, but I really wasn't prepared for how terrible it would be. I could be driving a car with 500 hp and get better gas mileage than this car and then there's the oil consumption. I knew from reading on here that the car would burn oil as part of the normal combustion process, but I had no idea I'd have to put in a half a quart or more of synthetic oil every 300 miles. Seriously, if I go more than 300 miles without checking the oil it gets dangerously now. To me that's just ridiculous.
Then I move on to the build quality. Mind you I bought the car used and it only had around 27K on it. I now have just rolled over 31K miles. It seems that all the plastic interior parts are so fragile and scratch up so easily. I'm very easy on my cars and take great care of them. Wash them at least once a week if not more and clean the inside. The car looks like it has way more miles on the inside than 30K. Then there's the exterior. So many little scratches and chips in the paint and I have a 7 minute drive to work. It's like the paint is made of candy coating. This morning I get out of my car at work and look down in front of the read wheel and notice that the clear coat is just starting to flake off in large chunks. Is this normal?
Not to mention recently my remote control keys will not open the doors or pop the trunk any longer. I have to use the button on the door handle and then pop it from inside the car.
Overall, out of all the cars that I've owned Japanese, domestic, German, etc. This car is by far the worst car I've ever had. I'm really considering taking a loss and selling it before it falls apart while I'm driving it. Any thoughts? I know I can't be the only one with these issues.

probably a bad place to come, to start slating the car. But as far as build quality, especially coming from a bmw it is considerably worse, i merely walked past the 8 the other day with a wrench in my hand and it just tapped the side and managed to chip it, ive had many things happen to my e46 3 series that have not resulted in scratches. Although its not all bad, i find the rx8 much easier to work on than my previous 2 3series especially under the bonnet.

your oil consumption seems rather high, mine is nowhere near that maybe half a litre every 600 miles? and i do redline very frequently.

For future reference, the answer to this question is 2 qts. There are 2 holes (max and min) and 3 dots in between on the dipstick. Each spot marks 1/2 qt of oil level.

So, if the oil light was coming on, just adding 1/2 qt isn't really doing you any good.
