Purchasing a used rx8

Hi guys,

Im planning to purchase a rx8 sometime this week. Its got round about 90,000kms on the oda. I was wondering where the seals are located, which components would break if a seal breaks while driving?

Cheers.

I'm gonna guess on this one, I've never had it happen. I'd gander that not too much else would break. There's few movable parts in a pretty elegant design (which is my draw to a rotary). I would say that it would just stop running.

The seals are located on the apex of the rotor(thats why they are called apex seals). And the rotor is inside the rotor housing. If you have a bad apex seal then the car will have no/very little power

on another note, do you think most rx8s will reach 200000km's without replacing seals or new engines? with proper maintenance offcourse, daily redlining but not too much, oil every 2nd refuel ect...

That's a little harder to tell.........I know of a few over 150k miles on original engines, so that's getting close to your 200000km's........there jusy really hasn't been enough years gone by to really tell. In my opinion of course.
The absolute best thing you can do is read, read, read, on this forum and then decide.

150 000 k miles is 240 000km's. 120k miles is roughly 200 000 km's. Yes It can if you take care of it.

Well, Mazda has extended warranty on the engine to 100,000 miles (which would be 160,000 km) so if the engine is worn out, you should get one replaced for free. You'll have to check if extended warranty applies to your country, but I think it should... just check with Mazda rep.

I think this only applies to Mazda in America.

Only in North America. (US/CA/Mexico)

Check with the guys on the Australia section of this forum. They have been finding out that their warranty has not been extended.

What year? Do not get an '04 and don't get an AT older than '06. You'll most likely need to swap a motor on an '04. Other years should be fine. ATs before the '06 had a lower power engine and a 5spd trans. The '06 and above had higher power engine and 6spd trans.

ummm...I just bought an 04 like 3 days ago. 6 speed with 113,000 miles on it. Bought it for 8 grand. Thought it was a good deal even though miles are a little high....was it not?

lol i feel for you, but as those pros said theres already rx8s with 150k-miles in good condition. I just got my inspection results back today, few problems to look into. "Slight intermittent engine miss, evident at end of road test, when at idle speed", whatever that means, its making me go paranoid but im sure it'll be fixed lol. i hope.............
