Depends where you live but that's right in some states you have to pay property tax on your car every year, just as you do with your house!
I live in Northern VA and pay tax on my car. If I lived across the river in DC I wouldn't pay anything on the car but would pay higher income tax, so I'm better off in VA.

Wow interesting. I guess there's a catch to everything though. I live in PA, and there is no property tax on cars. However, I bet my car insurance is a crapload higher then yours, and that makes up for the property tax, and then some. Either way we all get hit one way or another. Income tax here is high, as is property tax, so if I did have to pay property tax on rx8, I'd FREAK.

Your FIL may want to look into better insulation and a more efficient heating and cooling system (like geothermal). How big is his house?

Like VikinDJ said, we have no separate tax on cars in PA, but the property taxes for my little 1200sq ft house is around $3000.

Now I pay $10k for two properties, one of them direct ocean front and no income tax.

That's right, Florida has no income tax. Good point.

They wouldn't be able to count how much is due anyway... :p

That is outrageous!
I think the $1500 or so in sales tax is enough.

I pay $2295 on the house and it keeps going up. Of course, so does the value of the house.
The taxed value is only about 60% of the market value, so I guess I can't complain.

You should all move to Maryland!
Would Delaware be a better idea theres no sales tax there among a couple others right?

Thumbs down A Tax is a Tax and by any other name woud be just as...

In California we have a VLF (Vehicle License Fee) i.e. yet another tax that we have to pay yearly. It's about .65% of your vehicles value. So if the state says your 8 is worth $25,000 your tax is about 25,000 x .0065 = $162.

BTW Last year they tripled the tax to 2%, but it was repealed when they tossed out the governor and put in the Governator...

No sympathy here on those who pay property tax. In the end, people in NJ, NY and PA pay a boatload more taxes then anyone down south. Full 6% sales tax added to the purchase price of your car. I paid $1955 in sales tax on my rx8. Add the costly insurance on car, and well, it sucks to live here thats' for sure. Cost of living is so very high. I'd take the extras you pay over what I pay any day.

In Canada we pay 7% GST on car purchases, all all provinces (except mine) have a provincial sales tax as well.

However, sales taxes are a one-time cost when purchasing. I'd take that any day over a property tax I have to pay every year!

Not so fast...they will figure out some other way to get your $$$
(or not give it to you in the first place.)

read http://www.retirementliving.com/RLtaxes.html for some considerations.

FWIW: Florida is ranked #45 @8.8% tax burden. Ny is #1@12.9% (Big
Surprise there - not!) So, while the per capita state tax burden is
47% higher as a percentage of income, (about $2300 more in NY)
but the per capita income is about $7300 (22%) more. This leaves
you with a net $5000 more!

The flaw here is that that extra money is quickly consumed several times over
by higher (non tax related) prices on most everything.

It really doesn't matter which state you live in you are still going to pay a butt load of taxes. If your state doen't levy taxes on personal vehicles, then their registration renewal fees are usually higher, if not then the real property taxes are higher or the income tax is higher. If you have no state income tax your sales tax is going to be higher. Some states like CA., NY., NJ., etc do not fit this model, most states do. CA. with Prop. 13 has created a situation where some peoples property taxes are low, but the other taxes everyone pays is higher.

Taxes what a big #@*$$* mess!
