I've never seen an Evo where the owner wasn't abusing it. It seems like every owner of Evo's, Sti's, SRT4's around here are all little punk kids with something to prove. Those guys try to race everyone and everything whther it's in their league (above or below) or not. That may not be true everywhere but those cars seem to get abused by their owners far more often than any other car. I still think it's crap that a dealership would pull crap like that by sending people out to autocross tracks. Send them to the dragstrips on weekends to see where the abuse really takes place.
Well..... I guess I have to object again on this...... Your tires are not the only things that get abused...... think about over-stressed ball bearings, joints, axels, transmission, and not to forget, the engine..... Even though people still say that racing the engine in the 8 has no effect on it, people should actually consider taking physics classes and some thermodynamics while at it....... higher RPMs= higher tear and wear, higher heat build up = potential to find failures earlier.. period.

^^ you must be new, don't you know that everyone here is a physic's major. But i have to agree with RG, drag's will do alot more harm than autocrossin, for the most part the car already has plenty of inertia after 30 miles an hour so the wear on the drivetrain is so small is hardly matters(unlike tires, brakes, and so on most parts are built to last, especially the gearing, synchros, rear diff, and axles.) And as he quoted, if you drive it correctly, autocrossing will do as much damage to the car as driving on the highway.
BUT i do agree with expo1, chaos could enter at any moment and turn your car into a wreck, so choose wisely.

The whole point of a sports car is to drive it enthusiastically. A sports car is over engineered to be able to do this. It has larger brakes beefed up chassis and suspension and strong engines. It makes no sense when Mazda tells you not to drive a sports car like a sports car especial when they market them selves as a sports car company.

Zoom, Zoom.....what a pile of crap.

Take the dvd that Mazda sent to owners in with you to the dealer and show them the scene where it shows the rpm's redlining. Ask them how the car got to redline without going fast. Sounds like a case of "do as I say, not as I do".

I don't fully agree autox being hard on the tires only, cornering will be very hard on the whole cars chassis as well due to flex. My daily driver is abused the same way, hard cornering and that's all, after 2 years you can definitely feel the body isn't as rigid anymore needing a retorque of all nuts and bolts of the car.

First of all I highly doubt your friend's story, I'd imagine he read the very famous thread on Evom and is telling a bit of a tall tale. Not saying it doesn't happen, but there's only one case of this happening that I know of and it was a very famous thread, to the point that it showed up in various car mags.

Stuff like this is usually on a dealer by dealer basis. The dealer I took my Suby to was pretty mod friendly, my Mitsubishi dealer is even moreso. Hell, they installed my TBE. They also do various group trips to track days, the drag strip, and autox. The owner of the dealer, the sales manager (owns 2), and three technicians all own Evos. Whenever I stop by there they can't wait to show me their new mods. They also have weekly gatherings and hang around at install days. As long as there are not obvious signs of abuse and don't go crazy with mods they're cool with warranty work.

Lets face it though, people don't buy Evos and STIs to keep them stock and drive them around gently, DSMs were the same way. So when it comes to sniffing out abuse and denying warranty claims because of mods Mitsubishi and Suby probably have to deal with it more than many car manufacturers.

i agree with you in that alot of people with evo's and sti's are punk kids but alot of them up here in boston are pritty koo down to earth people wit some fast cars, i personally own a sti right now and i am getting rid of it bc of insurance and car payments and it hasnt been running right since the accident, but i am not one of those punk kids tho, i no my cars fast(13.1 @14.75 bone stock) but i wont go n try n run a viper or even waste my time running a honda, and i do beat the crap out of my car and i no it and i dun care bc its going soon i have done everything and havent broken the car yet.

Having just recently witnessed three cars getting wrecked at a HPDE day LINK that tape idea might only work on minor damage or dealer issues. Insurances companies didn’t become huge being dumb. “ Gee I don’t know how my Evo VII got totaled a mile from a racetrack in a town I don’t even live in”. You would also have to file a false police report to go along with your story.
