I was walking out of the local diner tonight, and this guy is just getting out of an R3. I ask him when he got it, and he says October, which is what 2 months ago. I ask him how he likes it, and he says "well it sucks oil and sucks gas." Well no s**t Sherlock, at this point anyone who buys the car knows that it uses oil by design. How can that be a surprise? The gas thing I can understand a little more because he said that he was getting 15-16 MPG, but if you are buying a sports car of any kind then gas mileage can't be a huge priority. The thing that really got me was the cliche way that he said it. It just came rolling off his tongue. He must have been hearing it elsewhere and just repeating what he was hearing.
Why would ANYONE buy a car just to say bad things about it? I've had mine for 6 years and 90K miles. I love the car. I thought that he would talk about the cool Recaro seats or skateboard handling. I just don't get it.

People are retarded impulse buyers. Many people buy cars without having a clue. My GF takes better care of her Corolla than some guys I know take care of their cars. I won't name any names but a certain local R3 owner (and second RX8) once asked where the throttle cable was when looking under the hood of my 8 . But we are teaching him,

Throttle cable. Really.
It was the way that he was quoting what he had heard. It wasn't even his own opinion. If you believed bad stuff then why buy the car? It's like self loathing.

I know it's fun to feel all sorts of superior and all as you trash someone who can't defend himself, and I know that this forum has been overrun with fanbois, but sometimes it's worth keeping in mind that lots of folks here claim to get much better gas mileage than that guy was getting; it's very possible that he actually believed Mazda's claims for fuel mileage and power.
He didn't "buy a car just to say bad things about it." He bought a car, expecting something other than what he got. So he's saying bad things about it because now he's unhappy and stuck (ever look at the resale value of these cars?).
We had our RX-8 for five years, and always got around 14mpg on commuting driving. That's pretty gruesome mileage; no other sports car costing less that twice as much gets anything like that kind of horrible gas mileage, and many get excellent gas mileage. If that guy has a long commute, that could run into serious money, vs. the claimed mileage (or the mileage any other comparable car gets).
The RX-8 is a fine car, but its gas mileage is nothing short of atrocious. Pretending otherwise is simply silly.

Haze, did you mention to that guy the RX8Club website and how, by joining, he may learn about some of the nuances that many of us who have been around a long time have come to enjoy about the RX-8, despite it's shortcomings?

I tell people all sorts of stuff about my car. I love my car - as much now as when I bought it but I don't like playing 20 questions with people I don't know. Maybe it was:
"Hey, how do you like it?"
"It sucks gas and oil" leave me alone creepo, I don't care about your nascar edition monte carlo ss and your 3 year old boy with a mullet, I'm about to go driving and I can't be delayed
Yes, that is how I think it was.
