All the problems you've read here are all real! Of course there are problem free 8s on the road as well, but genernally people would come to the forum with problems hoping to get some solutions. That's why many post seems to be about problematic 8s. For me, I've read enough, and very aware of what problems that I could be facing if I were to get the 8. But, since I wanted the car so badly, I over weight all those problems posted here, I'm still getting the 8 irregardless.
Frankly, I'd advise you to take up the STI, especially you have hesitation about the 8. Unless, you can don't whine and curse at Mazda if you've decided to purchase the 8, cause this forum already have enough of this people, which I think painted a pretty negative image of the RX-8.

Forget everything about reliability, etc. Forget that the Sti has been out for ages, is turbo charged, 4 wheel drive. Forget that the RX8 is new, incredibly eye catching, rotary, etc.

Which one do you like to sit behind the wheel of and drive the most? If it's the STI, just go and buy it. Otherwise, consider whether you can balance your lust for the RX8 against all of the fears spawned here and around the traps.

New cars attract criticism. Radical new cars ... well, you can see here by example.

If you have a small pee-pee and need an extremely high-horsepower car to prove that you are a "man", then I pity you. Probably a homophobe too because you think the gay men want you.

I test drove an STi today, lots of power .. fast fast... it's too stiff for an everyday car i think.

WRX STi arnt reliable, or cheap to fix when they go wrong either.

If you want a road rocket to max up get the STi.

kimhsoj my apologies for some of the stupid *** replies. There are some morons (thick-headed) rx8ers here.

However, seems to me that you are already fixated on the Sti due to its power. i driven both and i still prefer the rx-8. My friend's rx-8 has no problem what so ever (his mpg is about 22, so he doesnt really complain).

Out of 10 of ur inquries, 3 or 4 are related to performance, u luv speed dont cha, hhehhe, get the STi then, its a great car nonetheless, but so is the rx-8.

OK a more serious reply

1) i hear about all these lemons... is mazda remaking the engines for the newer models?

I've not seen, heard or read of any engine changes. for new renesis. The only problem I've seen here regarding the engine is a few faulty oil injectors. Nothing, NOTHING is ever produced 100% reliable. There will always be faliures, and faliures happen usualy early due to imperfections, or late due to wear.

2) gas mileage, i hear it gets less than the estimated 18/24.

Gas milage wont be any worse than an STi. I live somewhere where 'gass' is $5 a gallon, who cares, poor milage is the rx-8's (and many other performance cars) only downpoint.

3) Cannot performance tune? i read here that u cant change the cat or anyting.. can u turbo it? iono...

You can turbo it, you can mod it (see Canzoomers stuff). Its not easy as mazda have already done a good job of tuning the 8 stock. Plus have added a complicated electronics system (ECU etc) to manage the car - 95% of people dont mod their cars and want a good daily drivable reliable all round car. I'd gues more STi owners mod than many other brands - and its easier to mod them as there already turbo'd.

The RX-8 should make 280bhp NA modded, low 300's with a turbo.

4) reliablility. i hear that the engines break down and the trannys are all messed up.

So far I've heard of two transmissions and a few engines. out of 1000's of cars shipped. This car does not have reliability problems IMO.

5) Apex seals breaking? i read it 2 or 3 times now..

Where? I've not seen anything about broken apex seals. broken oil injectors yep.

6) Irvine dealers are dumbasses (haha)

Wohoo. this you add as a point?

7) warranty on the Rx-8 (nobody mentions it)

UK its 3 year, 60,ooo miles. I think the US gets a better warrenty , but I'm not sure, nor do I care.

8) Electrical Problems (tire pressure, fuel light etc etc)

9) slow car? ( 230+ hp right? i wonder wat its 0-60 time is)

10) Subaru Impreza STI is my other choice.. which one is better? (please i need unbiased oppinions)
