Options Schmoptions

As I prepare (slowly) for talking to a dealer or three about ordering a car I've come up with a variety of questions on various options. I'm sure there will be more. Any knowledge or opinions would be greatly appreciated. Prices and Mazda codes would be extremely helpful. I've got a lot of this information on some options, but not others. Some I'm not really considering, but just wondering about.

1) Just what the hell is the cargo tray and what purpose does it serve? And the collapsible cargo carrier is a bag, right?

2) Do you think the door sill is better with or without the pricey aluminum stick-ons? I find the black with the rotary symbol attractive, but the aluminum looks cool too.

3) Is the MP3 player's random mix from the whole disc or from the current directory? Or is that selectable?

4) Anyone got the night lights? Are they even useful down there?

5) Has anyone got the heated side mirrors as an option instead of with the GT package? What did that cost?

6) Has anyone heard of an option called 'Sport Type Instrument Panel Trim Inserts'? No idea what that one is or even if it really exists.

7) I'm planning on getting pretty much all the exterior options plus the front splash guards. I want an aggressive, exotic look. I like the type of spoiler the designers chose. I like the way the car looks with the spoiler. Traditionally the aggressive look has included a spoiler. Has anyone seen a car with all the exterior optiosn without the spoiler? How did it look? I'm kind of thinking it would be more boring from directly behind, but possibly more interesting from the side. Anyone? Anyone?

8) The lumbar support is driver side only, right?

9) Anyone seen the rotary wheel centers? How did they look?

1. Over priced plastic tray
2. You can always just buy this later. 10 min install
3. Get the MP3 or 6 changer
4. Night lights ? or fog lights. I think you say a picture of the under dash lights. I haven't seen that available.
5. GT only
6. aluminum bezels on the A/C ducts. standard on GT
7. Can be added later
8. Yes on GT
9. No, but would like them

Big choice is what package you want. All the rest can be added later. I chose the GT and don't regret it. If you had a choice between all the listed items and the GT package get the GT.

Useless.....

The interior looks even better without those stickers.

3) Is the MP3 player's random mix from the whole disc or from the current directory? Or is that selectable?

I would get at least the cd player. But that comes standard.

4) Anyone got the night lights? Are they even useful down there?

The lights are only red to match a red car. They are installed under the drivers feet.

5) Has anyone got the heated side mirrors as an option instead of with the GT package? What did that cost?

Standard Feature

6) Has anyone heard of an option called 'Sport Type Instrument Panel Trim Inserts'? No idea what that one is or even if it really exists.

Nope.

My opinion spiolers are losing public interest. It just wieghs the car down. Look at all the other exotic cars, they don't install spoilers.

8) The lumbar support is driver side only, right?

Yes

9) Anyone seen the rotary wheel centers? How did they look?

They're just wheel covers. again, another useless add on.

My advice is just keep the car simple and original. It realy is a beautiful looking car on it's own without all the fuss.

First, I know all this can be added later.

2. Thanks for the install time. Labor and a small profit on the part is all they should get for any dealer installed accesories.

3. MP3 or regular CD for me probably.

4. Yeah, night lights. They mount in little whole in the door - feel under the top interior trim piece of the door, near the front.

5. That is what I thought, but I found on the Mazda site (in one place) they are listed as a separate option (they are the only thing in the GT package that I would really miss).

6. I fairly sure I am not talking about the duct bezels - those are called Aluminum Air Vent Bezels. Very different name from 'Sport Type Instrument Panel Trim Inserts'. There is a huge difference between an air vent and an instrument panel.

Thanks for the info.

4) I don't think we are talking about the same thing, though they could be red (red is the best color to protect night vision). These are mounted in little recesses in the door. Thy don't seem like they would be very useful so low, but they might work for the passenger who wants to read or check a map. Mu Sunfire GT has little spot night lights on the mirror. They work really well there.

5) I know they come with the GT. I have reason to believe they can be gotten separately.

7) No one includes a spoiler because its an easy and popular add-on (often done by the dealer) which makes more profit than if they included it. I agree about the weight since they have no real effect, usually, until highway speeds and no significant impact until at racing speeds. However, they are also for looks. I think the RX-8 looks fine without one from the side (not sure how it looks with the appearance package though), but from directly behind (at least until close enough to see the coolness of the lights) it is a rather boring car.

9) All accessories are useless add ons to someone. I was wondering more how they look.

Thanks for the info.

How did you miss the snazzy piano black door handle bezels??? I think they look quite good.

Oh, the scuff plates make the car look especially flash when both doors are open too (my opion, everyone is entitled to their own - even when they're wrong!)

If you decide to hold of and install interior bits later, consider the carbon fibre nick nacks available as after market dress ups. I haven't seen any in the flesh, but the smallish pictures I've seen look **** hot!

Something I will be tracking down is a smaller rear vision mirror. I think the one I've got came off of someone's dressing table...

Door bezels? Hmm. Never heard or seen them. Actually I'd like Aluminum door handles ala the Z.

Thats what is so wrong about door sill enhancements (though they can look hot). There only seen a small percentage of the time.

I drove a VW GTI VR6 with carbon fiber nick nacks. I thought it was hideous.

A smaller rear view mirror woudl be good. The damn thing is eye level for me and blocks a lot to the right fore corner. Same problem in my Sunfire.
