After 1100 miles on my new 8, my oil level is down about half a quart. Should I top it off with that half quart or wait until it's down a full quart before adding any?

Top it off, might as well do it while the engine cover is off and your fingers are dirty ! Either way your engine will be fine, i found after 20000 miles on mine that the engine takes very very little oil compared to my 85 rx-7.

Your 8 will be happy as long as the oil is between the low and high marks. But, feel free to top it off if it makes you happy. Personally, I top it off whenever it drops down 1/4-1/2" below the full mark, just so I know that I'm no-where near the low mark.

I would just change the oil.
