ok, so...

i did some research on the 'break-in' period of an 8 (ok, well, went by a lot of heresay in previous posts and what the salesman and mechanic at mazda told me)

so, the manual says that there is no break-in period required, the salesman told me the same thing. the mechanic didnt sound like he wanted to talk, so he said "do what the manual says" (probably because it was saturday and the service is closed usually)

the previous posts here say to basically take it easy for the first 1000 KMs...

- so which one is it?
- what are the effects that anyone knows of if you dont do a break-in period?
- if mazda says its not required, why would anyone else think otherwise?

its still kinda strange that the manufacturer says one thing, and someone else says differently (or adds to it)

it gets confusing

also, read your manual a little more closely. it says not special break-in procedure is not necessary, but gives a few pre-caution/recommendations for the first 600miles/1000km...

* don't race the engine
* don't mantain one constant speed for long
* don't drive full throttle or over 7k rpm for extended periods
* avoid unnecessary hard stops
* avoid full-throttle starts

that's what the manual says. a more thorough guidline is the racingbeat guideline given above. and make sure you pay more attention when reading it than you did the manual

other recommendations, for the life of the car...
* don't go over 3k rpm until the engine is up to normal operating temperatures.
* avoid shutting the engine off cold
* if you do shut it off cold, rev the engine to 3k, release the throttle, and while the revs are falling, turn the engine off before it reaches idle rpms.

I would believe the manual, the people from Racing Beat, and the people from this board before I would believe a salesman and a mechanic "who didn't want to talk."

I have driven mine like I stole it since day one.

Of course it's a lease. If it blows up on October 11, 2008, I don't really care. I give it back on 10/10/2008
