Odd gear noise when clutch depressed in 1st
Hi, I'm a new rx-8 owner and I just registered on this forum. Nice to meet you all.
My 8 has 1k miles on it. I've noticed that when I get rolling in 1st and then press the clutch down, I get a weird, almost grinding type noise out of the gears until I actually make the shift into 2nd. Is this normal? I'm not an M/T veteran and i'm a little worried about the feeling/sound when this happens.
Thanks!

Welcome to the forum!
I know while idiling I can hear a faint scratching/grinding/rubbing sort of noise between having the clutch in or out while in neutral. My 04 has always done it. And I think it's pretty normal. It might be that it's happening in every gear but maybe you can only hear it while going slow in first.
Trying listening to the sound of your clutch while sitting parked in neutral and taking the clutch in and out while at idle and see if you hear the same noise. If it is I think you are okay and the sound is normal. I'm sure the experts will chime in here shortly though.

'Clunking' sounds are normal. If it's just mild noises when moving the shifter it's nothing to worry about.
If you're really hearing 'grinding' then it's prlly not normal. Unless you're a true rookie to MT, and you're not quite engaging the gears properly and that's why there's grinding.
Welcome & good luck!

Wait wait wait. Push in clutch, put shifter into first, release clutch/apply gas..go about 15 mph..and then push in clutch/release gas pedal..still rolling..
This is the circumstance, yes?
It's a bit of a "whirr" sound, yes?
Completely normal.

Yes, exactly what I'm doing. But it doesn't really sound like a whirr but something not as smooth or good. But it's not that awful either. Will synthetic transmission fluid reduce this noise?

where are you.. you might take the time to fill out the info like where you are from.
what you are trying to describe is gear rollover, but it does not happen with the clutch depressed...
if you have noise with the clutch depressed syn oil is not going to change a thing..
unless you have the one in a million bad pp or loose pp bolts..

Yes, it's when I depress the clutch so I can shift into 2nd that the odd noise happens. The guy above said this is perfectly normal.
What exactly is gear rollover? I do have the clutch depressed.
Should I take the car into the dealer for a look?
I don't get the noise when I'm rolling in first around under 8 mph or so, but anything above that, I'll get it when I press the clutch to shift.

gear rollover is when you are in neutral and the clutch is out... it makes a noise... it is the input shaft spinning in the trans... normal..
if you have the clutch depressed in gear you might have a bad throw out bearing, but i doubt it, very rare..
try getting up to 15 or 20 mph, put the trans in neu, and put in the clutch. see what happens..
note. if the cutch is in and you have your hand on the gearshift you are likely to have some noise..

Take it to the dealership. Immediately. If you can hear a "wierd grinding noise", it's not normal. This is what the warranty is for, to prevent small problems from becoming giant problems.

If I'm understading you correctly, I don't think your situation is normal at all. You're saying that only when you depress the clutch pedal above 8mph while in gear you get the noise? I've never experienced that in any car. I agree with Swoope. Just get it to the dealer.
I do have a host of whines, whirls and the like though. Touching the shifter will magnify tranny noise too.
side note:
Clutch pedal pressed=Clutch Disengaged.
Clutch pedal up=Clutch Engaged.
