Octane and Oil Questions

1. How do you know if you need to bump it up a grade at the gas pump??? I know in a traditional piston engine you can hear pre-detonation or "valve clatter" which lets you know. Is there a similar sound in a rotary engine?

2. What is the normal oil consumption? I have been driving the car for 6 weeks now and have not had to add oil although I check it regularly. Is there a good rule of thumb on this?

Thanks!

1. Sounds like a clunk sound, like someone crushing a can of soda with their foot. Or it can sound like marbles in a can. Or it can sound like the engine hitting a crossmember.

2. Depends on how you drive the car. For cruising I have to fill up maybe 3/4 a quart in 2K miles. For hard driving I can go through a quart in 80 miles.

1. My engine sounds slightly more raspy when running 87. Definitely not a big deal, but it just doesn't sound as smooth.

2. Normal driving (for me is about 65% highway, 35% city) is about a 1 1/4 quarts in 3k miles. It depends on how many miles are on the car as well. Just check it regularly and if you don't need oil you don't need oil...
