My 8 is sitting at the dealer awaiting a new engine from Mazda. The car has 40K miles and has been a headache. I love the car but the problems are starting to try my patience. The dealer just called and said it needs a clutch. I have owend manual shift cars since I started driving in 1976 and have never had to replace a clutch yet - some of the car I drove for 150K miles and never needed a clutch. Obviously, I am not hard on a clutch.

Shouldn't a clutch last longer than 40K miles? Especially given the fact that I do not have a history of excessive clutch wear?

I would tend to agree. I've never had to do a clutch, including two cars over 100K miles; I'd be irked if mine went at 40K.

 

Well Mazda stepped up to the plate and is going to replace the clutch as well under warranty. Must admit they are trying to make me happy.

It may not needed just yet, but why not, the clutch is right there and they have to take it out anyway.
