not just TURBO, but TWIN-TURBO!

now i'm the last person who would want to start a rumor. . but as i was test driving the rx-8 at GALPIN MAZDA in Van Nuys, CA. .. i asked about the whole turbo factor. what the dealer had told me was suprising. he had said that mazda is working on a TWIN-TURBO for the 8 with approximately ~325 hp! i sh*t u not he said this. to me it was unheard of because of the limited space problem...but as of now, i hope he's right! he said the Twin-turbo 8 would cost around the same as the 95 TWIN RX-7...er, at least 40k. if anyone knows anything about this please post. i know there's a few people here that work at mazda, hopefully u can fill us all in. thanks

BTW, all is expected in 2005.

(and if this is all BS that the dealer told me...sorry in advance)

I'd guess it's BS. Talk for the 2006 RX-7 is that the Renesis will be bumped up to 1.5 litres via wider rotors, with output expected around 300 - 320 hp. The same powerplant could be used in the Mazdaspeed RX-8. Who needs turbos? Mazda got burned so badly by their 93-96 RX-7 experience in the US (warranty costs) that I very much doubt that they'll consider a turbo anytime soon.

Regards,
Gordon

Salesmen at dealerships typically know about as much real information about upcoming products as they do about underwater basket weaving. In other words, take this with a grain of salt about the size of of the new RX-8's on the lot.

Yes, it's entirely possible that Mazda is working on a turbo/twin turbo RX-8, but the chance that your local salesman knows solid information about it is slim to none.

I hope MazdaUSA doesn't get mad about most of the rumors spread here.

Why, do you ask? Because 90% of them originate from their own damn dealers!!

Most forum members know when they think something is a rumor and probably isn't true, but many dealers just BS as if they don't know or don't care to get any of their "facts" straight.

after looking in person at the engine today, i've got to say anybody who says there isn't enough space isn't being very creative or thinks those plastic covers are an integral part. take those covers off and there's plenty of room to play with. i'd go super charger instead of turbo just because of where the space is, but who knows.

at the same time i think the salesman was blowing smoke. if they can't tell you why the cars are late, or where they are, do you really think he has a clue what Mazda is engineering next?

I don't trust dealers about stuff like that. They don't know ****.
Why would you want a twin turbo system in there anyways? Remember last time Mazda had a twin turbo system in one of their cars (RX7)? I was a complicaed system w/ 60 vacuum hoses and other crap. You don't need that.
Single all the way.

I call bullshit. There's simply no need for a sequential system any more with today's turbos.

Also, there seems to be a misconception that two turbos are better than one... the opposite is generally more true.

I agree, but not because of space limitations. Turbo rotarys blow up when the boost hits an unexpected level, leans out the air/fuel mixture and causes pre-ignition. A supercharger always delivers a 'known' boost level and it's boost curve matches the torque curve of the Renesis extremely well.

wouldnt it be better if mazda got the people who made the turbo for the mazdaspeed protege (i think it was calloway) to make them make a twin turbo setup for the rx8?

No, No No!!!

According to my salesman, the next rotary engine will be based on alien technology recovered from a crashed UFO.

The next generation will have a inertial damping device that will allow the engine to spin to nearly the speed of light!

That's like a 9,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 RPM redline!!!!!

However, NEVER use synthetic oil in the next generation engine, NEVER.

It will also have a break-in period of 7 light years

Keep this between us

And if you think my guy doesn't know what he's talking about.....you mistrust Albert Einstein?

Wiseass mode off.

I don't think I'd want the engine FI. I have a turbo car now and it's nice and powerful and fun, but I'd prefer the good throttle response and more linear power delivery of a NA engine. Even if it means less power.

detonation will kill most engines. anyway, i have a FC TII, and it runs great. true, there are risks involved with turbocharging rotaries, but if it can be done with a protege and mazda still offer a warrenty, then there's no reason it can't be done with a rotary. the only reason they would refrain from turbocharging the renesis lies not with whether or not it can be done, it has to do with the risk to the renesis' and rx-8's reputations.
