Hey all, I was wondering if there is someone willing to correspond via e-mail to answer my million questions...I know I could find most answers on the forum but I don't have 8 hrs a day to flip through 6 years of posts.

For example there are lots of conflicting answers on what a stock 2005 gets for HP and WHP, also lots of debate on SYN oil or not SYN. I have a lot more questions too.

Please e-mail me at RedSkydiver@vzw.blackberry.net

Thanks

Marcia

Before you start posting questions, take a little time to browse through the stickies and some of the more prominent threads.

If you correspond with one person, you'll get that one person's opinion. Some questions - like syn vs non-syn - have no definitive answer. You need to wallow in the info and arguments here, then decide for yourself.

I think you should ask them here because I'm sure there are some who have the same questions.

On the oil "debate" I don't think you'll find one "right" answer so you'll have to step up to the plate and research and then make the best call for you and your car.

By the way I'm a 10w-40 dino fan myself!!!

Welcome to the forum.

Do you have a source for your quoted 215 crank bhp other than estimated drivetrain loss, which is obviously a complete guess? Not to mention the questionability of dyno testing in general.

According to the Hymee website, the stock renesis makes 225 bhp at 8400 rpm, then the chart gets cut off but is still slightly climbing.

I guess I will ask again. Where are your sources for the quoted 215 crank bhp?

This is pretty well worn territory on here:

Hymee turned in 215

Racing beat turned in 216 before that

Just think with your dipstick! Dino, synthetic, and weight are up to you bud. There's to many opinions with oil to give an you the perfect combo. Search it and all will be good

I understand that but I saw some threads that said syn oil will damage the engine. Something to do with the film syn oil leaves as it burns off, being bad for the rotor seals.
anyone able to clear the air on this one?

Also, I read about the LJKMN flash, I have no clue what this is or if my car need to be taken in. Id there a way I can check? I have a 2005, 15K miles <-- I dont know if you need that or not.

Lets see...there was something else,
Oh yeah, is a cold air intake really worth the time and money? What effect will it have on HP, and fuel consumption??

You can take your car to the dealer and they will tell you if you need the flash, or call them on the phone and see if your car was built after the flash update came out.

Intakes will give you 1-3 HP, increase the rotary sound of your engine, and can give you a slightly higher mpg but hardly noticable. In the end, for the 8, an intake really does nothing but make the car slightly louder and deeper in tone.

I have used syn on previous RX's (I have put over 522K on RX's). Search here for recommend ones of members. I use to drive A LOT but now(retired!) very few and I have the dealer do about three oil and filters changes a year with less than two thousands miles on each. If you drive a lot and don't change your oil very often and plan on keeping the car a long time syn is a good investment because it does not break down as soon as Dino. Like my wife says "there's a butt for every seat". So do a little research and do what works for you.

Get your Vin# and get in touch with a dealer or Mazda USA to see what flash(ECU upgraded software) you have. You want to get the latest and what ever "TSB" need to be done.

The consensus on here on a CAI is the one Mazda built in is excellent for a stock car. You want more sound and possibly problems go for it, but do your research on here to see which ones to stay away from. Most likely if you get a used one cheap it's a problem one that the previous owner was not happy with.

These answers are mine and in no way will every one agree with all of them.

If I were you, and I had it all over to do again, I would leave the engine bone stock, and invest in some well thought out suspension bits, and some nice wheels.

Enjoy your car! Maximize what it does best!

Nobody can really clear the air...not even after thousands of posts on the subject.

Personally, I think the question is moot. There is near-unanimity on changing oil every 3000 miles. IMHO, changing that often you you would not be taking advantage of one of synthetic's big benefits: long oil life. So why squander the money.

But that's me.

The lastest flash is the one specified in MSP16. Any Mazda dealer can look up whether your car has it. They are supposed to do it to every RX-8 that they get their hands on. Find the TSB at finishlineperformance.com . Print it out, take it to a dealer and say "Has this been done to my car?"

a quick check for the reflash is to, look under the hood there should be a sticker, under the hood, or right by your headlight in the engine bay, should have a date, and mileage of the car.

a Cold air intake is not worth 300-400 dollors when

cobbs tuning wrote

We spent literally months testing with our
RX-8 and found that we had absolutely no reason to make an aftermarket intake for
that vehicle. Running ANY aftermarket intake system has the ability to compromise the
performance of our calibration and possibly compromise the engine. The stock RX-8
intake system flows very well and promotes a laminar air flow across the MAF sensor,
