New RX-8 Owner

My name is Eric. I live in Ohio and closed on an RX-8 on Friday. She is a 04 Red GT. I've found her to be one of he most fun cars I've driven. Even more so than the Mazdaspeed 3 and the Lan Evo. (These cars were fast but you couldn't drive them on any public street like they were meant to be driven. It really detracted from the car because you felt restricted.)
Does anyone have any new owner advice? I've heard a lot about putting thicker oil in, to mixing a bit of oil in the gas. Also read up on not shutting the engine off cold and am very familiar with shut off procedures. This is my first rotary so anything else I should know about how to take special care of this car?

Welcome, and bravo for doing your research.

Remember if you dump premix into your fuel, it's not 4-stroke oil, its 2-stroke oil. I'd read up on that closely before you do anything.

Redline it regularly, this engine does not like being babied (let it warm up properly first of course).

I assume its used, being an 04. Maybe check up on its maintenance records, and maybe give it a decarbon engine cleaning for good measure.

If you flood the engine and the standard deflood procedure doesnt work for you, just pull/push start it. I have an 04 myself and deflood precedure never works for me.

Those are just a few things that came to mind, all of which have been discussed at great length on this forum. Make yourself at home, welcome to the club.

4Flyer, where did you buy your 8? I saw one advertised at Jeff Schmitt Mazda and thought about going to look at it this weekend, but got an e-mail from the saleman who said it was sold on Friday....just wondering if this was the same one.

Go_Steelers, I am very sorry but I bought your car

My affection for RX-8s started last year and I had looked at them off and on since. When it came time to buy a new car this year one of the cars in the pool was a Mazdaspeed 6 which Jeff Schmidt had two of. When I showed up to look at one, a guy bought the other one at the exact same time and traded the RX-8 I am now driving in on it. After I was unimpressed with the MS6, I asked the salesman if I could test drive the RX-8 the other guy had just traded and he agreed. I fell in love with the car again but left the lot without making the sale. They called me back Thur night and asked if I was interested in the 8. I told them I was but their asking price was too high. They asked my budget and I told them. They called back with a lower quote but it was still too high so I told them I was sorry and could not work with them. Friday morning they called me and said they really wanted the car gone and asked if I was still interested in my original offer. Knowing now I had them hooked on my finger I made them throw in a fluid top off and a full tank of gas When I went to pick the car up Friday the guy who had originally traded it in bought his new MS6 back to the lot to have license plate brackets put on it. Although I never spoke to this dude throughout the whole ordeal, I thought it was ironic how the whole thing panned out. What fate.

The guy took exceptional care of this car too. The carfax I pulled up had it in on every regular service ON THE DOT. Not to mention frequent oil changes and routine maintenance on the car. Car now is in exceptional shape with only a few blemishes that are easily fixed. The steel plate in the door frame (there is a word for these and I can't think of it) need's glued down on the passenger side and a crack in one of the radio buttons, as well as two tiny door dings, are all I could find in a very complete inspection of the car.
