New RX-8 Owner!

Hey guys... finally did it. After a couple months of contemplating on a new car I finally bought an 8. My Audi finally completely crapped out on me when I found out water had somehow made its way into the master cylinder and brake lines and the Audi dealer also happily informed me it needed $5,000 worth of work on top of that problem. So I found this beauty of an 8 and finally decided it was time:

2004 Velocity Red RX-8 (Touring I think)
18,000 miles
6MT
Red/Black Leather
Bose/HIDs/Sunroof etc

best part: four brand new blizzaks mounted on rims thrown in for free
all for $16,000. Another plus... 4 year extended warranty.

I thought it was a fairly good deal given the low miles and snow tires. So far my RX-8 has been putting huge smiles on anyone who rides in it. Absolutely love it.

See you all on the road!

Now I just need some tips on keeping my RX-8 happy. Is there a sticky thread somewhere that says everything you need to know to keep your RX-8 running well? I know how to avoid flooding but that is about it. What kind of oil is best? I've also heard it is good to redline the car a couple times a day.

Oil is a huge debate around here, I personally just follow mazdas recommendations, 5w20. Redline once a day. Make sure its warm before shutting off. Usually uses a quart between oil changes, some are more and some are less. Those are the basics and that alone will keep your engine healthy.

Since it's an '04, have a dealer plug in the VIN and make sure all the recalls have been done. Plenty of knowledge on these boards, use it liberally. Enjoy your car!

check on oil frequently, preferable when the engine is cold so you get the right value reflected. make sure you always have enough oil, i suggest you always have some with you (just store it in the trunk). try to not have signal on your dashboard that says your oil is low as this can damage your engine and then it's going to be expensive. should you receive it immediately stop and refill oil as you have it with you

after a while you know the trick, it's just like a pet. feed it, take it out to "run" some, and say nice things to it. xD

have fun with your 8

All the recalls have been done, he showed me the papers for them. The guy who owned the car was the biggest rotary nut ever. We even had the car inspected my a Mazda master mechanic and he said it was in absolutely pristine condition.

Redline: Yes (although you shouldn't have a problem fitting this one in, as it's so damn fun)

I personally use 5w30 Castrol GTX Dino oil. Works for me, but there is a ton of debate about what is best. (Search for the oil thread and the expo1 engine rebuild - they both have tons of info)

From what I've read, the consensus is that 5w20 [Mazda's recommendation] is not as good for the engine, especially considering Mazda recommends 5w30 outside the United States.

I've had mine now for a month, and loved every minute of it.

18K miles ! Thats really low for a 04 model.

Do your Rotary a favor and put at least 5w30 into it.

check oil level every 200 miles or so.

Zoom zoom it a lot (redline)

Change ur oil every 3K miles.

thats all.

To the OP: If you have leather you have a GT by the way, not a touring.
