New Motor being installed:

Received a call last night to bring my RX-8 for an engine change. The new engine arrived yesterday and only two days late. They said my 2004 was not getting enough oil in upper RPM's. Never had a flooding problem and the car at 30,000 miles was running great until the 30,000 mile service was performed. When I got the car back there was a hesistation in lst gear and lower RPM's in second. I have also noticed a odor of something burning after stopping from an extensive drive.
I'll keep you posted on the engine change.
Hope the directions are in Spanish. Miami dealer!

The dealer just called me advising that while they were replacing my motor, they checked my clutch which is worn. $476.00 to replace while they are doing the engine change, normally around $1100.00. I agreed and should have the car back by Saturday.
Anyone out there that has had to change their clutch? At how many miles and the cost.
Thx

You could get a much better aftermarket clutch for $476. Do a search on the forum.

they just wanted to make a few more $ off of you. Unless you were launching the car hard often, I can't see how the clutch would need changed at 30K

If you care, Here is a list of flywheels for the 8

Thank you for the list, factory clutch only waranted for 12,000 miles. I am still going to appeal to Mazda Corp. on this. If I was a drag guy, I would understand, but I am into anything that has a bend. I would have bought a Vette or Stang if I was into drag racing. I just hope everything works when I get my baby back. I am driving a Mazda 5 as a loaner. I almost pasted one turd at work that called me a socker MOM driving the 5.
Thx again.

Picked up my RX-8 today with re-built motor and new clutch. I asked the Mazda tech how to break in the engine. He said "drive the hell out of it"! The car so far runs great, no hesitation and the clutch is good. I ran it through the RPM range to 8500 RPM's through 4th gear. Smooth as she used to be. I'll keep tabs on my babie's performance and keep it posted.

I would be VERY careful about revving it that high at first. The service manager told me the same thing but if you read all the posts here - you should at least go 700-1000 miles before you really get on it. I have only 700 miles on mine and I am taking it easy - not going much above 5K RPM yet.

On a side note, not sure mine is runnign right anyway - no power until I get to 4K RPM. I know the power curve is such that the power starts to ramp up around 4K and on but my is a slug at anything below 4K

Bob,
Thank you for this. The hesitation is gone in first gear which is great. Mine acted like you are decribing yours after the 30,000 miles service before the re-built motor was installed. If I were you, I would take it back to the dealer.

Listen to the folks on this board and not the idiots at the dealership.
