There is no direct correlation between octane and mileage.

I run 87 in mine and I'm nearing 90,000 miles and no problems, but it needs to be good 87, like a name brand mobil or exxon, chevron, shell or bp/amoco any others and it runs like **** cause the ecu leans the hell out of it and retards the timing. I don't know it is the additives or the ethanol content or what but in my experience that's what works for me.

Well dont ever do it!!! My poor Rx 8 ran like **** almost like it was about to stall out and die! The check engine light came on and stayed on all the way up til we FINALLY got more premium gas around here and i couldnt fill up fast enough! All is better now but i learned my lesson and figured I would let anyone know on here that thought about trying to use regular gas NOT to ever do it!
You mention a big piece of the puzzle ("cuz of the hurricane") but I think you overlook it. The hurrican disabled a number of refineries. It takes time for a refinery to come back on line, and not everything is running optimally for days or weeks. So it would seem quite plausible that the "regular" gas that was available was not the usual formulation. Also add in possibilities of contamination from flooding, etc..

the manual suggests for optimum performance to run 91 oct, is this implying a cut in timing advance? Any dyno evidence of this?

Some manuals come out and say you will lose x hp, my Dodge Stratus RT states that running less than 91 oct will result in loss of timing advance and output will be reduced to 190hp vs. 200hp on 91oct.

yup, a reason why some people get better gas mileage with higher octane is because when they use lower octane gas the engine's knock sensor is sensing detonation, which leads to retard in the timing, which leads to reduced efficiency.

Remember, the performance of a gas is found through a test on an engine with fixed conditions, with the compression being variable. They then raise the compression until detonation is observed.

1.20 (Canadian dollars per liter) = 3.87023226 U.S. dollars per US gallon

And that's a huge cheap relief after the long time running of

1.50 (Canadian dollars per liter) = 4.83779033 U.S. dollars per US gallon

So **** any of you americans complaining about 3.59, that's dirt cheap and you can suck it up.

Oh yeah, and that 1.20 I posted is for regular, premium's closer to 1.40 still.

As for the mileage, one of the big problems we face is this stupid ethanol gas. Ethanol has less energy in it, but it's more resistant to detonation, so the engine will run like it has 94 octane best-****-ever gas in it when really it's got ****-poor corn-gas in it.

Exactly. Unless there's some other qualification, it's almost always the opposite, everything else remaining constant.

Many of the reports were about people driving all over town looking for gas. Smart. Or, waiting in line hours for gas... double smart, as you also burning up... gas.

So what is it, you guys a bunch of panic stricken idiots, or was there a shortage? I'd like to know the real story.

It was certainly because of the hurricane! The pipeline nashville uses is directly out of houston and it was shut down completely for a while. Atlanta started having the same problems as did knoxville. Yes people panicked but wouldnt you if you heard there was no gas being shipped in? As stations ran out the other stations of course would get busier based on the principle that the customers who would normally go to one gas station would have to go to another if one is out and so on and so on. As the pipeline came back in service they were not a bit worried about mid-grade and premium gas because there was such a shortage and they wanted to just get gas back to the areas who ran out. Nashville people are no more stupid or smarter than any other part of the nation.....we are people and THANK GOD it didnt happen in memphis cuz they would have literally KILLED each other trying to get gas!
