NEVER EVER use regular octane gas!
#52
I run 87 in mine and I'm nearing 90,000 miles and no problems, but it needs to be good 87, like a name brand mobil or exxon, chevron, shell or bp/amoco any others and it runs like **** cause the ecu leans the hell out of it and retards the timing. I don't know it is the additives or the ethanol content or what but in my experience that's what works for me.

I live in middle tennessee and about a week or two ago, as prob most of you heard, we had a huge gas shortage. Premium gas was IMPOSSIBLE to find as was mid grade because they stopped making it temporarily cuz of the hurricane. Regular gas was the only thing we had IF you could even find any so I had no choice but to get regular gas which I hated to do.
Well dont ever do it!!! My poor Rx 8 ran like **** almost like it was about to stall out and die! The check engine light came on and stayed on all the way up til we FINALLY got more premium gas around here and i couldnt fill up fast enough! All is better now but i learned my lesson and figured I would let anyone know on here that thought about trying to use regular gas NOT to ever do it!

the manual suggests for optimum performance to run 91 oct, is this implying a cut in timing advance? Any dyno evidence of this?
Some manuals come out and say you will lose x hp, my Dodge Stratus RT states that running less than 91 oct will result in loss of timing advance and output will be reduced to 190hp vs. 200hp on 91oct.

yup, a reason why some people get better gas mileage with higher octane is because when they use lower octane gas the engine's knock sensor is sensing detonation, which leads to retard in the timing, which leads to reduced efficiency.
Remember, the performance of a gas is found through a test on an engine with fixed conditions, with the compression being variable. They then raise the compression until detonation is observed.

1.20 (Canadian dollars per liter) = 3.87023226 U.S. dollars per US gallon
And that's a huge cheap relief after the long time running of
1.50 (Canadian dollars per liter) = 4.83779033 U.S. dollars per US gallon
So **** any of you americans complaining about 3.59, that's dirt cheap and you can suck it up.
Oh yeah, and that 1.20 I posted is for regular, premium's closer to 1.40 still.
As for the mileage, one of the big problems we face is this stupid ethanol gas. Ethanol has less energy in it, but it's more resistant to detonation, so the engine will run like it has 94 octane best-****-ever gas in it when really it's got ****-poor corn-gas in it.

Hey, I have a question.... you're STILL saying it was a result of the hurricane, but if you had read any of the national or international news sites that day, you would know they more or less called everybody in Nashville retarded because you caused your own shortage. A rumor caused panic.
Many of the reports were about people driving all over town looking for gas. Smart. Or, waiting in line hours for gas... double smart, as you also burning up... gas.
So what is it, you guys a bunch of panic stricken idiots, or was there a shortage? I'd like to know the real story.
