it could be water in gas, or your car is having a problem, its just that you never know it.

Yup, sound like bad gas, I've been running 87 for the last three years with out issue at all. Tried Premium a few time and the only difference was my wallet was a little lighter.

i'm too poor to run anything but regular for now. but might go back to plus or premium that gas prices are $3.13 a gallon now. But i havnt had any problems. Gas stations tend to have filters in their pumps as well as oil water seperators. But like mentioned earlier if the pump is being run alot due to a shortage and condensation in the tank, the oil water seperator could easily fill with water allowing the heavier water to get pumped through with the gasoline as well.

Well dont ever do it!!! My poor Rx 8 ran like **** almost like it was about to stall out and die! The check engine light came on and stayed on all the way up til we FINALLY got more premium gas around here and i couldnt fill up fast enough! All is better now but i learned my lesson and figured I would let anyone know on here that thought about trying to use regular gas NOT to ever do it!

I have an 04 GT and have run regular since day one (5 years 32k). I've never had a problem, the car is the most dependable new car I've owned to date. I passed through Tn and filled up last week on a 3k mile road trip. Had no problem with their 87 octane, the car ran fine. You must have gotten a bad load of gas. The 8 runs great on regular. I can't agree with your post. It's not true for me.

Indeed. We've of course had this discussion many times. You certainly can run 87 (although I also choose to run premium most of the time), as evidenced by owner's manual entry on subject:

Premium unleaded fuel 91 [ (R+M)/2 method] or above (96 RON or above)
U.S. federal law requires that octane ratings be posted on gasoline station pumps.

***You may use a regular unleaded fuel with an Octane Rating from 87 to 90 (91 to 95 RON) but this will slightly reduce performance. ***

Rotaries absolutely love low octane provided the ecu isn't messing with things. This is where the problem lies. It's not the engine and please don't tell me that this only applies to older rotaries and not a Renesis. They are the SAME engine! I'd run a lower grade of fuel than 87 in my RX-7 if I could find it.

No no no, octane boost is a waste of money. A $3 bottle of octane booster will turn your tank of 87 octane gas into 87.1 or 87.2. Utterly pointless.

It seems like if you switched from premium to regular it would be a good idea to disconnect the battery to reset the learned parameters in the ECU, so that fuel and timing can adjust to the octane.

So is running 91 or 93 detrimental to the Renesis in any way?
Does running higher octanes in rotaries have any benefits at all?

Not detrimental at all other than probably a waste of money assuming you're playing with a factory-equipped, completely stock Rx8. It's no different than any other sold-to-the-public vehicle. Figure with this rationale: These factory-built cars are dramatically de-tuned because their target markets are owners of varying driving temperaments that exist in widely varying climates with only so high of quality of fuels available. They're meant to be turn-key and easy to drive to the grocery store, to work, that kind of thing in both the summer and winter times. With that, they have to be built to withstand anything within that given framework that's thrown at them. Low grade 87 octane fuel fits in that category. The motor shouldn't be allowed to ping or knock with it.

The benefits of any kind of high octane race fuel only have to do with yielding more torque per stroke when doing heavy load, big power, way out there aftermarket stuff.

^^well explained. But it should be added that milage will change with octane level. as long as the gas isnt being watered down, or anything like that higher octane provides better milage. Sadly the increased milage still does not balance out the increase in price. Which is why every car is not on it. I used to go nothing but premium in my 8 for a bit, but with a sever crunch on money available, the 8 has been forced to take a major back seat to other things. Hence no real mods yet, and me running 87 gas. Thank god prices have come down a bit though.

I don't think that's true. In fact, some people here have reported better mileage with lower octane gas. Higher octane does not mean higher energy content.

I switched from 92 to 87 a couple months back when I knew I was going through a tank over the next 3 hours. You don't need to clear the ECU...you don't need to drive any different. Everything is the same. In this case I am more apt to believe that the gas had some water in it because of the shortage as already discussed. I would also assume that some plugs or coils might be needed in the future just as part of normal maintenance if they haven't been swapped.

My mileage has stayed constant since my switch to 87. I have noticed no loss of power nor the burping/sputtering as described previously

Hey, I have a question.... you're STILL saying it was a result of the hurricane, but if you had read any of the national or international news sites that day, you would know they more or less called everybody in Nashville retarded because you caused your own shortage. A rumor caused panic.

Many of the reports were about people driving all over town looking for gas. Smart. Or, waiting in line hours for gas... double smart, as you also burning up... gas.

So what is it, you guys a bunch of panic stricken idiots, or was there a shortage? I'd like to know the real story.
