Might want to do some reasearch in the sub forum here for pricing- you should be able to get some nice deals on an '04 model. The 05's only changes are pearl white, key FOB, and some possible minor wiring harness changes.

The car does burn oil. This is intended. I checked my oil level every other gas tank for the first 1k miles but now am backing off on checks. The MPG is low but hell, this is a sports car- expect it at purchase. I might reccomend a search of the forums for a few keywords- lots of this has been discussed over and over again but never be afraid to ask. A good idea is to add a question onto the end of a related topic as to avoid making a bunch of new topics that have been repeatedly brought up :D

I'm getting about 17-18 mpg on mixed driving, and visiting the 5000+ rpm range rather often. I suspect when things are running properly, even the most aggressive drivers should make at least 15 mpg. As far as the oil is concerned, I am not noticing a major amount of consumption. I've been told to check every 2nd tank, but I've added only a minimal amount over a 1,000 mile period, and that was just because of all the paranoia that is caused by reading on these boards. Good luck with your purchase, from a happy owner.

Well, our last tank was just under 15 mpg. Granted we do rev it up regularly, but if you're looking for a car with great gas mileage, this isn't it. If on the other hand you're looking for a very fun and functional car for a great price, it's tough to beat the RX8!!!

The "burning oil" issue has been blown way out of proportion. Mazda suggests that you check the oil level every 2nd gas fillup, but I doubt very many people do that.

I've driven about 9,000 miles and had to add 4.4L/quarts of oil...and I drive my car pretty hard. Total cost to me (excluding oil change): about $10 CDN. Number of times I've checked the oil: ~ 5. Number of oil changes: 1.

Oil consumption has been blown out of proportion. I added 1/4 of a quart after first 600 miles. The service tech told me to expect about 1 quart (tops) every 2000 miles. So far I added once in 1600 miles. Changed oil at 1K.

Don't expect much more than 20 miles to the gallon on the average.
