Nail In Tire!! Am I screwed?
Getting a little upset about this. My family has had 3 nails in three tires in the past 2 weeks. One in my sisters Mercury Mountaineer, one in my fathers new corvette, and now one in my new 8. Less than a 1000 miles and I already have a nail!!
Do all 8's have TPMS? If so how does it work, in other words how does the car inform you that you're losing tire pressure? I haven't recieved any warnings yet, so atleast its not leaking.
I just noticed this about an hour ago, so all the tire shops are closed due to the holiday. Anyway, here are some photos....this is the left rear tire. Is this fixable or am i screwed? I know its pretty close to the sidewall. Sorry abou the crappy second photo, little blurry. I can get more if need be.

Why patch when you can get those 5$ "rope" kits at your local auto store. I have +100k miles on several of them including on the 8. Besides a shop is going to give you crap and say it damaged the side wall. I say do it your self.

I bought the tire protection Mazda offered at $2.95 a month when I purchased my car and it's come in quite handy. To date I've had all four tires replaced due to almost constant construction where I work (2 nails and 2 screws). But just a FYI...after the first one I asked if it would just be patched and was informed they would not patch a Z rated tire as they couldn't warranty it afterwards. Something about it not being able to stand up to the speeds the tire was rated to go. So maybe replacement is the way to go for safety's sake.

The TPI indicates a hi/low pressure condition by illuminating a little yellow/orange tire symbol on your instrument cluster - you can't miss it.
That nail is pretty close to the sidewall...tough call. Personnaly, I would replace the tire...but I also have that road hazzard insurance (sp).

I caught a nail in the exact same part of the tire on my previous car. Pepboys folks said it is not very wise to patch a tire that close to the sidewall. Infact they refused to do it. And no they weren't just looking to sell me a new tire. I replaced the tire.

A nail puncture is a cheap and easy fix unless it's in the sidewall. I've had that happen... it meant needing to get a new tire.
You can drive around for a while until the shops open. I drove for a couple weeks with a screw in a tire (that I didn't know about). It had caused a slow leak and every few days I pumped up the tire.
Just drive a little conservatively, especially if it's in the front.
Happy New Year!

I picked up a nail about 2 weeks after buying my RX-8 brand new. Poor tire didn't even have 1500 miles on it when the TPMS light came on. At first I thought the pressure had been marginal because it only leaked down to ~24psi so I just pumped it back up. However, after finding the light on 3 mornings in a row I took it to the tire shop and they found and patched the nail. $20, end of story.
Sucks to have it happen on a brand new car. Why are nearly bald, worn out tires immune to nails?
