N00b Question: How do I drive this car!!

another fun thing to do around town ......

leave it in 2nd gear and cruise along at about 5000 rpm - when your passenger least expects it and when you have some open road - floor it .
Ahhhhhh - what fun . That trick has just about got me divorced a couple of times but wtf - I had fun .

heres an answer.

u wanna be around 1k for "skillful no clutch burning take off from stop
1.5k for a lil more powerful go from stop

shift at 3.5 - 4k for normal driving
shift at 6k for spirited driving
and redline tat bitch as often as u can afford to.

on highway, down to 3rd for power
on regular road, down to 3rd should be enough, but bleep it high enough u can go down to 2nd.

(btw, nycgps: can you *really* pass people quickly in 6th going 60-65mph? The rx8 is below 4k rpm at that speed in that gear. It laughs at me if I try to pass in that speed range in 6th gear. Maybe if you're already going 85...or if you have a turbo installed)
I know what you mean, I just bought my black '04 RX-8 after 5 years of SUV driving, so my skills are a bit rusty. I find I can drive comfortably around town shifting at between 3500-4500 RPM and not wasting too much gas. I was cruising at back from Hilo with cruise control at a steady 66 mph in sixth at somehwere around 3000 RPM, this offers limited acceleration potential. You won't bog the engine down, it's extremely flexible but it's not blazing fast trying to accelerate from 3000 RPM. If you want to pass go down a cog or two.

Once and a while I jab the throttle just before starting at a light to bring the RPM's up while letting out the clutch. I still am fascinated by the sound of the engine. The truly happy RPM's are between 6500 and 8000 RPM.

Of course, I live on the side of a volcano so I may do more hill climbing that most.
