There's a thread on nasioc.com about the weakness of the gears from independent labs that have done metallurgy tests on the broken gears.

I attend meets with WRX drivers and of the 20 or so people I've met not one has had a tranny problem, and most of their cars are modded with pretty decent miles. While the tranny does seem to be the weakest link of the car, as is the case with a lot of higher HP AWD cars, I find your 10 of 11 statement highly suspect.. I fully aknowledge there are some issues with our tranny's, but you and others are doing what I've seen several times on WRX boards, exagerating the shortcomings of the car. If you listen to the WRX haters you would find that the WRXs interior is made from old milk cartons, our warranty gets voided with the slightest mod, 90% of all our trannys fail, it's slower than a Base Civic from a roll, and our cars come from the factory maxed out in power. Believe what you will, but I think you're full of it when you say 10 of 11 have had tranny problems, even though I fully acknowledge there is something not right about the WRX tranny.

Well, I used to run the local suby meets here in vegas.
Do some research on the board and you will find the independent lab reports on the metal treatment for the gears.
Maybe it's the vegas heat out here, but maybe it's not!
Glad there are happy owners out there! Suby hit a price point that nobody else could. I'm not a hater, I loved the car, and I still do, despite the weak link.
Now the STi could redeem the issues that we have seen locally, but it's a whole different animal
edit:
ikewrx: take it to pm, i just sent you one, let's not get too off topic here.

Like I said, not denying something isn't right with the WRX tranny (I'm a regular at a couple WRX boards and read NASIOC regularly but don't post much) and the tranny has been a curse on a lot of AWD higher HP cars. I know a guy with almost 200 1/4 mile passes and 2 seasons worth of autox and he's still on his original clutch and tranny while being highly modded. Then again you hear on the boards about the odd tranny failure at 5k miles. I think there's a few factors involved. One being the tranny itself, another being that many people that get a WRX aren't experienced with MTs, and yet another being the nature of AWD cars and the fact that if the clutch isn't slipping or the tires aren't there's a ton of stress being put on the tranny. The only problem I had was your 10 of 11 statement, I almost wish it was that common across the board because then Subaru would be forced to do soemthing about it. As it is now it's problem here and there and not so common that Subaru has done something about it, yet... Though it does seem to be more of an issue than with most cars on the market, but not many cars on the market can be compared to the WRX.

It's become very clear the RX-8 was not made for what I look for in a car.

I and almost everyone I know think the '8 is underpriced. People who see it for the first time consistently guess it's priced in the $40's so yes, I think it's underpriced for what you get. For me, the flashy looks and gizmo's rank high on why I like the car, and the performance is all that I need and more. I would have bought the car for up to $38K (fully loaded like I got.)

Well Ike, I am not going to defend you this time! They all raise valid posts as to why you are here. You are not buying the car, not anything more to learn, maybe its time to go?
It seems my attempts to help you have failed.
Anyway, I have some involvement with the scca by way of a friend, and I have heard of the tranny issues, and they seem to be somewere between the two opinions here. We know that both mitsu and sub have been compiling lists of people racing the cars, and are denying warrenty cliams on this basis.
I would rather take a 9 HP loss, then be spied on.
And indulge me, what type of kart do you race, and where?

It's an old post that should not have been bumped, I had just recently test driven the car and was really disappointed. I came off strong on the post and said what I felt at the time, if you guys would like to attack me at least do so about things I've said recently.

I've lost faith in Mazda, I doubt I will ever consider another car of theirs again. They are always so good at teasing me with nice designs, and interesting concepts but they always come up short and blow something (usually in the power department)

OK, it was an old post. I wasn't trying to be mean, just stating what I have observed. My older brother used to have a RX-7 and it was great. He now has a 911 and plans on smoking me on thankgiving. Maybe, we'll see.

My dealer told me they were increasing also. It is possible. I read in an auto journal about the increases expected from Europeon Makes and Japanese as well and prices CAN change in a model year.

I haven't been posting much since I decided the RX-8 wasn't the car for me or my girlfriend, but I've still been reading to boards from time to time. These boards have some of the most loyal and blinded fans, rotary enthusiasts, trolls, some people just trying to learn about their new purchases, and some car enthusiasts. I would say I fall into the later category, but with what's been going on with the RX-8 certainly makes for an interesting dynamic on these boards. I love all types of cars and I am loyal to the WRX, but I by no means think it's perfect or even close to it. I also belong to some other boards for various reasons, I mainly just enjoy learning about cars...
Chuck, the Miata is a hell of a car for autox and I've discussed purchasing one along with my father for autox on more than one ocassion since the way WRXs are don't make for ideal autox car. However, I wouldn't want to drive one daily nor could the Miata hang with my WRX on a real track (or on the street), which I have in the past and will be going to next season. The tight low MPH turns on an autox track catter to cars such as the Miata, the WRX is to easy to get out of the sweet spot on low speed turns when in stock form. The cat configurations make the WRX a much better candidate for non stock classes so I'm just going to continue to mod and race in one of those classes next season.
Vudooodooodooo, I already own a kart so I won't be getting an Elise :p, but I've been seriously considering upgrading to an STi or Evo, but I've decided to mod my WRX and wait a couple years for now. The RX-7... I love that car but no way in hell I would touch a used one, I just don't see engines as disposable parts. Defend the RX-7 all you want, but I've looked at used ones many times for a few years now and it's almost impossible to find one that's hasn't had to replace the engine at least once.

Haven't been posting much, huh?
371 is so little. Why bother if 371 posts is all you can come up with. You do post extremely often. Either you like the car, you hate the car, or you have nothing better to do with your time.

See Ike? Its not just me. I wonder, should I repost that message were I traced your history of nasty rx comments?
No, I think not
I just wish you would get the message, You can not insult people, then be polite, and expect them to forget it.
Let me put it another way: lets say I punch you in the face every day you come to work for one week. When you go home, you find I have been sleeping with your girl (Who I am sure is very nice and chaste, not ment as an attack.) On friday, I say "you know, I really did not mean it that way, I want to start fresh. I really like your girl, and wanted to show it. I really like you, and show that by punching you" Would you forgive and forget? I think not
Dramatic example, but perhaps it will help you understand.
I could always use one syllable words and draw stick figures, if it would help.

Geeze guys, ease up on Ike. A little dissent should be welcomed. It can strengthen your conviction if the person's facts are untrue or if their claims unsupported by fact. Opinions about looks or price are simply too subjective to get exorcised over although nothing wrong if you disagree.
Some of you may be taking Ike's comments too seriously. I don't think he means any disrespect and he often offers interesting counterpoints. Unfortunately critical comments can come across much harsher than intended when written.
Btw, I'm bummed with the price increase talk. Not only will the vehicle registration fee triple here in CA in October, but a price increase for the 8 price, too? Not worried enough that I will go out this weekend and purchase an 8 without waiting for the other car I want to see, the 04 TL.
