MSRP Price Increase???

I am in the process of buying a new RX8. Even though I am not in a hurry to buy this car, the dealer I was at told me Mazda was going to increase the MSRP on the next shipment by 8-12%!!! The finance manager even showed my wife an official looking fax indicating this was true!

Has anyone heard about this increase?? If this is the case, I will surely not wait to buy this car.

Thanks.

rodmeister 09-01-2003 11:06 PM

Sure that makes sense. HP is down by 3.6% so they'll charge you 8%-12% extra for that. :D

joseh 09-01-2003 11:10 PM

LOL. But that should work the other way around. They should be decreasing the price, not increasing it!

Maximus 09-01-2003 11:13 PM

price increase = BS

5Gen_Prelude 09-01-2003 11:25 PM

If it was true, it would make sense. You have to get the money for the trade-ins and service contract with their dealers somehow. But I don't think it will fly. Add 3 grand to the price tag? Tough sell.

Ike 09-02-2003 01:09 AM

If that's true, what a load of crap. I don't think the car is worth what they are selling them for now considering the performance I experienced on my test drives. But I buy a car for performance first, some torque would be nice, flashy looks, and neat little gizmos being pretty far down on the list. For instance I will never own a car with a sunroof because it adds weight, same with power seats if I can help it, nope no leather for me. It's become very clear the RX-8 was not made for what I look for in a car. In fact I had a Mazda MX6 that was a lot of fun to drive around as a kid, but overall it was total piece of crap.

I've lost faith in Mazda, I doubt I will ever consider another car of theirs again. They are always so good at teasing me with nice designs, and interesting concepts but they always come up short and blow something (usually in the power department)

The more and more you see the RX-8s on the roads, the less speciall and unique they will be. They are starting to look a little overly done and gaudy to me and the funky door lines are no longer funky in a good way.

Ok now all the fanboys can come and tell me what a troll I am :p

Ike,

Just trying to understand why you hang around on a forum for a car you dont like? If you dont own or arent interested in the RX-8 what do you actually get out of the board?

I'm not flaming you, just trying to understand. I love Impreza's and am currently on my second one, an STi. However I have an RX-8 on order as I think this is a unique car that is more than just about performance.

I have driven lots of cars that I have decided are not for me, and I dont hang out on their forums because I no longer have interest in the car.

Your perception of how a car looks has been severely compromised with your desire of the WRX :D

I am very new to all of this. I purchased the car I enjoy it and I found this forum to find out new things about it. This forum has been unbelievable in knowledge about the RX-8. Most of it I do not understand yet, but I am learning.

What I do not get is how does a person get to be a senior member and not even have the car. Why would a senior member have lots of negative things to say about the car? If they do not like the car why not just go somewhere else.

Not trying to be a smart**S. I just do not get the purpose of postings like IkeWRX. I mean I already bought the car and enjoy it so what are they trying to do. Is the goal to make me turn it in and then they win something for that. I just do not understand, and it would be nice to know because I have been wondering about that question from day one.

Senior Members are posters with a certain number of posts. Anyone that makes enough posts (even if they are a lot of the same annoying posts over and over) eventually get there. It just means he's posting over and over and over and over.....

And there was a rumor of a price increase soon at Mazda corporate, but it was something like $500, not $3k. And after the hp flap, I doubt they'll increase it until at least next year. That would just add insult to injury.

Chuck Clifford 09-02-2003 08:04 AM

My dealer told me back in April that he could not get prices on any RX8 after the three allocations already on his inventory. This usually meant a price increase in the past, he inquired at that time and they told him that 04 allocations after December were going to go up 2K to 3K.

There were rumors of this when people were starting threads about the RX-8 seeming to be underpriced for all that you get. Now with the HP correction, it could change.

Local cars flew off the lot last week with the 500 dollars and free scheduled maintenance. So who knows, one more bad bit of news could send the prices soaring.

What you're looking for is a bare bones sports car. The RX-8 is not a bare bones kinda car. Not many cars today are bare bones.
Anything that comes close to that is the EVO and the STI. The soon to be release US Lotus Elise is the most bare car you can buy. It's practically a go kart.

vudoodoodoo 09-02-2003 08:24 AM

If you want a true sports car from Mazda, get an RX-7.

Chuck Clifford 09-02-2003 09:19 AM

Hey IkeWRX maybe you should get Miata. Heres the results from the local SCCA chapters latest rally. It appears that stock Miata's are consistently beating the stock WRX's. I'm so glad that I don't drive a single dimesional car in this multi-dimensional world. Probably not enough straight away on our local layout to bring your car into competition.

MIATA 50.397
MIATA 53.175

WRX 55.746
WRX 56.706

I don't doubt pricing going up.

The Mazda 6 went up shortly after release, but the the incentives might have countered the increase.

I read on the mazda6 forum of one guy that got his A plan pricing and then it went up $500. The invoice price increased.

The MSRP is not increasing. Most likely the dealership is planning on adding an 8-12% markup on their cars, and they're trying to pass it off on Mazda.

I came here in the first place because I was excited about the car. Then I started considering it for my girlfriend as the release got closer or maybe even myself if I liked it that much. I really do like the car, but I guess only in someone elses driveway at this point.

I haven't been posting much since I decided the RX-8 wasn't the car for me or my girlfriend, but I've still been reading to boards from time to time. These boards have some of the most loyal and blinded fans, rotary enthusiasts, trolls, some people just trying to learn about their new purchases, and some car enthusiasts. I would say I fall into the later category, but with what's been going on with the RX-8 certainly makes for an interesting dynamic on these boards. I love all types of cars and I am loyal to the WRX, but I by no means think it's perfect or even close to it. I also belong to some other boards for various reasons, I mainly just enjoy learning about cars...

Chuck, the Miata is a hell of a car for autox and I've discussed purchasing one along with my father for autox on more than one ocassion since the way WRXs are don't make for ideal autox car. However, I wouldn't want to drive one daily nor could the Miata hang with my WRX on a real track (or on the street), which I have in the past and will be going to next season. The tight low MPH turns on an autox track catter to cars such as the Miata, the WRX is to easy to get out of the sweet spot on low speed turns when in stock form. The cat configurations make the WRX a much better candidate for non stock classes so I'm just going to continue to mod and race in one of those classes next season.

Vudooodooodooo, I already own a kart so I won't be getting an Elise :p, but I've been seriously considering upgrading to an STi or Evo, but I've decided to mod my WRX and wait a couple years for now. The RX-7... I love that car but no way in hell I would touch a used one, I just don't see engines as disposable parts. Defend the RX-7 all you want, but I've looked at used ones many times for a few years now and it's almost impossible to find one that's hasn't had to replace the engine at least once.

The engine doesn't have to be replaced if it's treated properly, but no one bothers to do the research and maintainence required of a high-performace sports car..but that's a whole other thread ;)

3dobuzz 09-26-2003 10:29 PM

Yes - I have been shopping around just this week and dealer told me that there would be a $2K-$3K increase when the new ad campaign hits. Of course it is end of the Q3'03 as well...so who knows if it was fabricated.

I am a little concerned with the 'quality' of the car. Lots of problems, and I saw a really bad fit between rubber seal and interior molding on the rear door of the showcase car in my dealer's lot. Overall rating on Edmunds has been positive, though.

Going to check out a G35 Coupe tomorrow - hoping that I won't like it as much - but got to do my due diligence.

BillK 09-26-2003 10:59 PM

Wow, what a flame to throw for an initial post.

What, exactly, are these quality problems you speak of? Far fewer than any other new car introduction I've seen of late, and really, I can't think of a single problem that's not a sample defect of some type. Some say A/C cycling is a problem, others the interior heat buildup, but they're not "defects" per se.

The only real issue I know of is the flashing oil light on early build cars, and that's since been fixed...

I haven't read the whole thread but I had to post here.

Out of 11 WRX's I know of, 10 have had tranny failures on them in one way or another. 50% of those are people that are not enthusiasts, one is a wife of a friend, a school teacher, one student, etc.

Region rep denies warranty as soon as possible, all for stupid reasons.

There's a thread on nasioc.com about the weakness of the gears from independent labs that have done metallurgy tests on the broken gears.
