My check engine light surprisingly came on tonight after all the utter most care I give it with no obvious reasons why :s do mazda dealers charge you if you go to them and ask what's wrong and how much on average if they do?

 

If you're out of warranty most dealers will charge an hour labor to read a code. That's in the $90 to $120 range. Autozone and one of the big transmission shops (AAMCO?), and maybe some of the other chains, will read codes for free.

For the price of a dealer reading the code you can buy a code scanner of your own. I bought one for fun, and it was nice to have when my light went on because of the gas cap.

Even if your in warranty they still charge you $100-150 to look over the car and see if somethings wrong. Then if its something the warranty covers you get a refund, if not the money you put down goes towards covering whatever they are gonna charge you. Thats how my dealer works anyway, they told me that when I called and asked about some weird sounds when I turn at slow speeds.
