Wow your serivce guys are tight asses butI guess that means they give you better service up there than down here. InMiami no onereally gives a **** what you do to your car. The trade offis they dont really care if you wait for hours and usually forget to do a few things you asked for.
Three different service guys have toldme I can mod any partof the car I want but if theres ever a problem w/the car that leads back tothe mod Ill have to pay for the repair. Otherwise Ive been told that Im morethan welcome to do anything I want -- and one of those wise asses even ASKED ME why its taking so longfor me to slap an exhaust or intake onto my Rx8.

You are correct that a dealer can't void the warranty, it is up to MNAO. But, the reality is, if the dealer is the one recommending that the warranty be void based on removal of the cat, what do you think MNA will do?

I am curious as to why the heck they put this car on the lift though!

Good luck- remind them that they partially encourage us to enter the world of motorsports by hosting their rev-it-up events each year

I am curious:

Deos the japanese version of the 8 have a cat, is it standard on countries that don't require it???

Anyway, Talk to MNA explain that the cat is only removed for track events or whatever and thet you didn't have time to put it back bofore talking the car in. Then put hte damn thing back in your car or replace it with a hi flow one (I have herd that the diference between a hi flow one and a regular one is not much)

Explain to MNA that you have put the CAT back in and offer them to inpect your car to see if at it's present condition they still consider that the waranty should still be voided.

After that cross your fingers and hope that the representative from MNA likes you because it is realy up to him and what he decides if your warranty lives or dies. (and he has the authority and reason to void you).

Best of luck hope everything works out for you and get another dealer because even if they are good it sounds like they dont apreciate you very much (mabe you remind the mecanic of his girl's ex-boyfriend :-)

Did you guys know that only MNAO can void your warranty, and not the dealer? Go online and print out the Magnusson Moss Warranty Act, and shove it in their faces. Call Mazda Corporate, and raise hell. They cannot void your warranty over that, they can only void the warranty on the replaced part. END OF STORY.

Having never heard a RX-8 without a CAT I assume his did not sound stock. So he takes it in for a switch and the service tech starts it up and what does he hear?? What seems to be a “problem” with the exhaust system? So what do you expect them to do when they clearly hear his 8 does not sound “normal”. They take a look and what do they see no CAT. Second the dealership named in this thread is a “Mazda Full Circle” dealership. That means they can do “free of charge” a basic inspection of your car so you can bring it in for one thing and they can look for something else.

Got to it first, I was thinking about the potential sound also.

It's things like this that make me hesitant to do anything to the powertrain outside of a catback and intake, or a mazdaspeed flywheel.

Actually, if you read that tag more closely... it should say something like... "except by the consumer". So if you went around your house pulling off these material content tags off all your furniture, you'd just work up a sweat... if you did the same thing in a matress/furniture store.... it'd be your new roommate bubba that'd be working up a sweat.

Sure hope MyRx-8yourcar responds today and lets us know what finally happened and if the problem is resolved. Sure are a lot of posts on this issue. I personally could not bring myself to take the CAT off with this car but anyway someone did and we can hope he gets it resolved.

Ok...after a long day and many phone calls to MNAO and a uneventful personal visit to the GM of the dealership all is resolved. I explained to the GM that I take the cat off for race purposes only and place it back on the car inbetween. He basically treated me like I was some punk kid that is just doing this to be cool. He was a bit surprised to find out that I was 27 yrs old and a Doctor of Audiology. After that point he treated me with a tad more respect. Needless to say his attitude was still that of god of the automotive industry. I politely told him that if he was unwilling to establish some type of mutal rapport then I will go directly to MNAO. He gave me the whole song and dance that "it is illegal" ect ect ect. Basically he was a d!ck and stated that it was out of his hands. So I decided to end it with him and speak with MNAO on the phone and explained the whole ordeal. At that time they looked up my account, my standing with them and did state they were notified about the request to void my entire warranty by the dealership. I proposed to them that I would be willing to forfeit the portion of the warranty that covers emissions and would gladly have my lawyer write a proposal releasing MNAO and it's certified dealers from any responsibility if/should my car were to fail state mandated emission testing. Furthermore, should my car experience any failures or problems as a result of me taking my cat off. Obviously, MNAO needed to review the request and would get back to me. After about 3 hours I got a call around 2:30 from MNAO on my cell phone. The end result was that they will not honor the dealerships request to void my warranty and that it will remain intact. Politely I asked why and they had stated that they had recieved numerous notices from this dealership for similar instances (not all cat removals) and believe it is their attempt to increase revenue for their service and parts department (I got the hint from there). I then asked well is MNAO going to do anything about this dealership and what I basically got was a don't ask don't tell kind of response. They went on to say that with persons experience with this dealer it is their choice to go back, but assured me that my warranty will be good at any authorized Mazda dealership.

Sorry so long.....

Glad to hear it... thanks for the update. I know it's a bit of a hike, but my dealership (Anderson) in Crystal lake has treated me like a king... you might be happier there.

Whats funny is I normally take my car to Biggers. This was the first time I took it to SM and the only reason I did was cause it was close to my work.

This is the part I don't really understand: "believe it is their attempt to increase revenue for their service and parts department (I got the hint from there)".

How would they be increasing revenue by having your warranty voided? They have to know that you would never go back to that dealership!?

Glad it worked out for you but I still think you should spend a few extra bucks and get a high quality high flow cat put on. Sorry but that's my $.02.

This kind of behavior won't increase their revenue of course, but I bet they think it does. I'd explain it like this:
A. Some dealers have a bad attitude
B. Some dealers have no brains
C. This dealer falls in the small area of intersection between A and B! :D
D. If there weren't so many consumers in Group B, this dealer would soon be in Group E, for EXTINCT!

Must be something in the water up in Illinois I think and dealerships are drinking the stuff by the gallons. My dealer here in Colorado was going to get a Red RX with everything from a dealer there and the jerk called my saleslady and started to give her a lesson about the car business and payment up front and all sorts of crap. He wanted my salesperson to buy two RXs from him to get the red one. Two cars!! Of course he wanted to unload a yellow one. She never called him back as she found one in Texas without a wing and so they put the wing on here and only had to buy one car from Texas. Sounds like a few bad dealerships are up there. This true story is a good one to show how some dealers are pretty bad with their customers. I think they threw out the book called, "The customer is always right". I don't understand how these creeps that sell these great cars and stomp on their customers remain in business at all. This is pure business 101 stupid stuff to do to kill a business in my opinion!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

you realize of course after talking with MNAO and posting it here that,if you hadnt already told them you post here, MNAO now knows what name you post under here maybe you should go get yourself a hi-flow cat to be on the safe side. glad it worked out and it didnt have to go to the lawyers.

on a side note i had this dull non-noise in my ear the other day. sort of like half the sound was blocked. i would have thought it was some water in my ear but it started in the middle of the day and lasted for several hours. whats the deal with that Doc?

Did you take any Tylenol or Advil (or any of the generic versions) before it started to happen?

Is this both ears or just one? Do you use Q-tips? (don't lie). If it continues I would go to an ENT to get it checked out.

Asprin will cause tinnitis....not acetomenophin or Ibiprofen.
