I had my coils replaced at 69,000 with the new engine...
Unless you certainly saw proper documentation showing that the spark plugs were replaced with the new engine, you might have gone through all 93,000 mile with the original spark plugs, coils, and wires; thus, the misfire The dealer would not just put new ones on your second engine free of charge.

I think you are getting just slightly below average reliability for a 4-port auto. Those are least reliable. There is also probably a problem with spark or fuel that has been affecting the engine/cat for a long time. I think the only mistake you made was never noticing that your car was running like ****.

No, rotaries are not that unreliable in general. 4-port autos with badly rebuilt engines and anything less than perfect maintenance are notoriously bad.

I should note, by perfect maintenance, I mean much more than following the schedule in the manual. However, I think it is unfair to expect owners to be perfectionist car nuts.

Sorry, you've simply got a bad car. There have been plenty of cars with piston engines that were as bad or worse, and while rotaries don't last as long, plenty of them live up to reasonable expectations.

It’s official... I'm getting a brand new engine in about 10 days. I have to let you guys know something disturbing... about Mazda... when they rebuild my first engine (close to 2 yrs ago). My Mazda Mechanic/friend told me something very important. That my first engine when it was sent to get rebuilt it “wasn't” actually sent to the Mazda plant (here in the U.S). Rather it was sent to some subordinates near the Mazda plant, who knew little/nothing about the rotaries, they we're the ones who got paid by Mazda to rebuild our “beatup” engines. I'm assuming mazda saved money by doing this? Anyways, Which was why some of us, I've heard we're getting 3-5 engines or more being replaced due to improper rebuilds and ignorance of the non-Mazda specialists who we’re working on our engines. Which caused great number of loss of engines for over a year or more.
Mazda recently took action in letting their own specialists (who have proper training to work on rotaries) at the Mazda plant to rebuild them. Due to this founding my mechanic has told me, the engines that are being rebuild now a days are much more reliable and close to factory configuration then the engines which have been rebuild a year and half ago.

Let me now about you guys think about this finding? Maybe... some of you already know about this.
