It is because of the fire breathing engine.
Just count spark plug fireings per revolution and see what ya get.

At least they got rid of the old "Thermal Reactor"exhaust manifold that baby cooked the exhaust at 5000 degrees.
PS. Dont park on any tall dry grass ,, unless you have a Fire Exstinguisher.
Might I suggest leaving out the pass through cover and let some A/C air in their.
Oh and try living where I do. The temp today is about 111 degrees.
I don't think it gets that hot in Montreal. So I think your trunk is cold compared to mine.

I don't think any of us are trying to poke fun. It's the same as when I post "my car flooded and now I have to get it towed ...again!" It's a known thing. Hell, if Ike is going to storm MNAO and get it fixed ... excellent!
And even though my post was in jest, it IS true. Getting the cat-back made my trunk into a regular old trunk. No heat worries.

Yes, use Dynamat or Thermco product.
Best to get a trunk mat and put it in between the carpet and mat.
Next I would look at drilling hole in the fake pastic mesh in the bumper.

I stopped by Ikea on my way home and grabbed a few of those Maribou chocolate and hazelnut candies like I used to get back on the Rostock ferry.
I didn't think about it and put them in the trunk.
They were liquid after a 10 minute drive home.

Maybe yours doesn't because you have a turbo and are generating more heat?

If it makes any difference, my car has a Borla cat-back installed.
I use my trunk for groceries all the time. I usually have about a 30 minute drive from the grocery store to home, and I put milk and other cold stuff in there every time. It never goes bad and I've never gotten sick. The only thing I will pull out and put up front with me is ice cream.

The warmest spots seem to be the depression in which the spare tire would sit, and just in the small recesses in front of the lights - which makes sense because that's where the muffler and tips sit closest to the chassis.
Short of an active cooling system there, I can't see anything passive really making much of a difference in the long term. You could always drill speed holes in the trunk...

One of the first things I did when I got the car was to lift the trunk carpet, and lay down a layer of that thin silver bubble insulation (used for insuating garage doors), it was hot, now it's much better.
...and I'm in Canada too!
You can also deal with it by air conditioning the trunk; the air outlets are in the trunk, so if you have the aircon on it will blow right thru and the trunk air will be the same temp as the cabin air. If you open windows, there is zero flow thru the trunk, so even on a sunny day it gets quite hot.

I removed the center door in the back seats and open all 4 windows and that keeps it cool too.

It's not reasonable to expect Mazda to engineer a solution for an issue that boils down to personal preference, then offer a cost-free retrofit to every RX-8 owner on the road.

I was not aware of the build-up of heat in the trunk, but have been aware of the intense heat in the ashtray as well as the center console. I had been keeping my cd's in the center console but now think that that may be too dang hot for them. Yea, I guess it's a pain somewhat...but the fun and overall performance of the 8 makes me not lose any sleep about the high temps in those locations.
