I guess not all of us see it as a "serious problem".

When it starts to melt my gym bag then I'll worry.

Maybe we should storm Mazda headquarters! Who's with me!

I do use the trunk as I would in any other car. (Except that only one set of clubs will fit in there, and the pull cart rides shotgun.)

Second that. I'm not losing sleep over the heated bag of clothes that I keep forgetting to drop off to good will. Mostly it provides me the security of nearly running temp oil whenever I need it. What do you have in the car that you need to use the trunk for groceries?

Mazda is quite aware of the heat the Rotary put's out.
It is because of the fire breathing engine.
Just count spark plug fireings per revolution and see what ya get.
FLAMES OUT THE ***.
At least they got rid of the old "Thermal Reactor"exhaust manifold that baby cooked the exhaust at 5000 degrees.
PS. Dont park on any tall dry grass ,, unless you have a Fire Exstinguisher.

Might I suggest leaving out the pass through cover and let some A/C air in their.
Oh and try living where I do. The temp today is about 111 degrees.
I don't think it gets that hot in Montreal. So I think your trunk is cold compared to mine.

I don't think any of us are trying to poke fun. It's the same as when I post "my car flooded and now I have to get it towed ...again!" It's a known thing. Hell, if Ike is going to storm MNAO and get it fixed ... excellent!

And even though my post was in jest, it IS true. Getting the cat-back made my trunk into a regular old trunk. No heat worries.

I know we joked but its a problem barely since well it is a sports car. Those who have it (which is alot) we move around it. We dont put our Ice Cream in the trunk or ice. We put our Pizza's in the trunk when picking them up (I honestly do this!) and at times use it as a drier. Heck this subject is even on a T-shirt for "You know your a Rx-8 Owner when.." but anyways I'd suggest looking into a Catback as a few have stated that it solved their problems.

Yes, use Dynamat or Thermco product.

Best to get a trunk mat and put it in between the carpet and mat.

Next I would look at drilling hole in the fake pastic mesh in the bumper.

Should he do this before or after he removes the stick from his butt?

117°F over here in Ahwatukee.
I stopped by Ikea on my way home and grabbed a few of those Maribou chocolate and hazelnut candies like I used to get back on the Rostock ferry.
I didn't think about it and put them in the trunk.
They were liquid after a 10 minute drive home.

No, it won't.
I've got the MS v2 exhaust and no CAT and the trunk temps still get over 140°F.

I put a layer of heat barrier cloth under the cup holders and that worked. I might try a layer of the stuff under the trunk and above the muffler heat shield.

I never took temp readings, but in the Chicago winters, I'm pretty sure I could feel a difference between when my exhaust was OEM and now. But I keep a coat in my car that I wear when I'm outside at work. Before, keeping it in the trunk on the drive to a location would warm it a bit before I put it on. It no longer gets as warm. Placebo, possibly, but I'm inclined to say when it's 0 F in the dead of winter you notice these things.

Maybe yours doesn't because you have a turbo and are generating more heat?

If it makes any difference, my car has a Borla cat-back installed.

I use my trunk for groceries all the time. I usually have about a 30 minute drive from the grocery store to home, and I put milk and other cold stuff in there every time. It never goes bad and I've never gotten sick. The only thing I will pull out and put up front with me is ice cream.

The warmest spots seem to be the depression in which the spare tire would sit, and just in the small recesses in front of the lights - which makes sense because that's where the muffler and tips sit closest to the chassis.

Short of an active cooling system there, I can't see anything passive really making much of a difference in the long term. You could always drill speed holes in the trunk...

Arrow Agreed....

One of the first things I did when I got the car was to lift the trunk carpet, and lay down a layer of that thin silver bubble insulation (used for insuating garage doors), it was hot, now it's much better.

...and I'm in Canada too!

You can also deal with it by air conditioning the trunk; the air outlets are in the trunk, so if you have the aircon on it will blow right thru and the trunk air will be the same temp as the cabin air. If you open windows, there is zero flow thru the trunk, so even on a sunny day it gets quite hot.

I'm going to try the "Bubble insulation (Used for insuating garage doors)" thanks for the tip.

I removed the center door in the back seats and open all 4 windows and that keeps it cool too.

Amidst the snickering and wise cracks, this thread has addressed the issue and suggested several approaches to a simple DIY fix:

aftermarket exhaust system

insulation/heat reflector under the trunk floor

increase ventilation

It's not reasonable to expect Mazda to engineer a solution for an issue that boils down to personal preference, then offer a cost-free retrofit to every RX-8 owner on the road.

I was not aware of the build-up of heat in the trunk, but have been aware of the intense heat in the ashtray as well as the center console. I had been keeping my cd's in the center console but now think that that may be too dang hot for them. Yea, I guess it's a pain somewhat...but the fun and overall performance of the 8 makes me not lose any sleep about the high temps in those locations.
